Setting

The setting describes where and when the story take place.
The story takes place in 1918, the year World War I ended in Europe. Summer was dead, but yet not autumn. You could smell the scent of the graveyard flowers, and could hear no sound coming from the birds, it was a dead summer. pg. 315

Character

The character in the story is usually a person or animal.
The Major characters in the story is Doodle and brother. Brother is a round character because throughout the whole story he only thought about himself and not about how doodle felt. But at the end of the story when doodle died, he felt bad, because he noticed how careless he was with doodle. Doodle is also a round character, before he was scared to try new things because of what the doctors and others said, but he learned new things and developed more and more through out the story. he died, but he died knowing he could do things others said he couldn't do. pg.323

"The last graveyard flowers were blooming, and their smell drifted ... every room of our house, speaking softly the names of our dead."

Conflict

Conflict is the "problem" that triggers action or the struggle between two opposing (opposite) forces. The conflict in this story is internal because doodle had a hard time believing in himself, he kept thinking he couldn't do stuff others could do because he was different. pg.316

Foreshadowing

Abstract foreshadowing is thoughts/ feelings a character has or the way a character acts. The story is abstract foreshadowing because the reason doodle wouldnt want to do things brother tried to teach him was because the doctors told him he was suppose to be taken care of gently and properly, but brother didn't care. so doodle would get scared to try new things, but he eventually did things people and the doctors said he couldn't do. pg.319
