Some Important Points About The Course
- This class is entirely online. You may login at ncvps.instructure.com. Notice: this is NOT Moodle, we are using Canvas.
- Please use the login information that your school has provided you. If you were just added to the class please login ASAP. If you are having any trouble with logging in please contact me ASAP. It is imperative to your success that you login and begin working ASAP.
- This class takes about 1.5 hours (90 minutes) of work each day.
- Mozilla Firefox is the recommended browser for Canvas. You can download it for free.
- Technology requirements for the class can be found here: http://ncvps.org/technology-requirements
- If you do not have access to a computer with internet at home it is your responsibility to find a place to complete your work. Public libraries, after school computer labs, and the homes of family members and friends can be great places to finish up your work.
- You are expected to contact me at least once each week. You can contact me by text, phone, email, or Canvas message.
- There is a Virtual Support Center located in the class in the event you have technology issues.
- We have a great Peer Tutoring Center where students help students.
- You are expected to do and submit your own work. Please familiarize yourself with the NCVPS Honor Code if necessary.
- If you don't have Word you can download a free version at http://www.openoffice.org/
- You can also use Google Docs but you must convert them to Word or PDF to submit. Zamzar is a great resource to help you with this: https://www.zamzar.com/
Deadlines in Honors Chemistry
· Assignments are due by Module, and always on Thursdays at 11:59pm.
· The Getting Started Unit and Module 1 are due Thursday, February 7th at 11:59pm.
· Late point deductions will be applied to late assignments after the 4th week (this is to allow anyone who is added late ample opportunity to catch up). At that time all late assignments are deducted 10 points for the first week they are late, 20 points for the second week late, and then a deduction of 40 points for all work submitted after the second week.
Module Due Dates & Student Holidays
Please note that NCVPS does NOT extend modules for students holidays. If a student expects to miss school, he/she should work in advance to submit all required work for a module by the due dates as outlined below. We have student holidays scheduled on the following dates:
- 1st Day of Class, January 28th
- State Holiday, Friday April 19th
- State Holiday, Monday April 22nd
- Memorial Day, Monday May 27th
- Make note that Module 9 is scheduled for 2 weeks. Module 9, usually a 1-week module, will be due by 11:59 PM on Thursday, April 25th. This is to accommodate Spring Break. Regardless of when your school is on Spring break you should work accordingly to meet the due date expectations. Work may always be submitted early.
- Last Day of Class, Friday May 31st

There you can run a System Test to see if there are any updates you have to make to your browser.
Reporting of Grades Throughout the Semester
NCVPS instructors are required to submit progress reports every two weeks during the semester. These grades will be made available to schools within 1-2 days after they are submitted.
I will notify parents/guardians of students progress a couple of times each month. I do this via text and/or email, so it is very important that I have your correct information. These progress checks will be general and will include whether the student is "on pace and doing well" or "behind pace with missing assignments." To know the students exact grade at any point in time you are able to log in under parent/observer access (see the information above and below).
The Canvas Parent App
Parents and facilitators can now download the Canvas Parent app in both the iTunes and Google Play stores.
Parents and facilitators will need student login information to set up their parent accounts. This will have to come from the school or student. NCVPS cannot supply login credentials to parents or facilitators. Check with your school’s e-learning advisor (ELA).
The Canvas Parent app is designed to provide visibility into a student’s progress at a glance. Canvas Parent allows both parents and facilitators to:
- View assignment descriptions and due dates
- Set reminders for assignments
- View assignment grades
- View course grades
- Set grade alerts
- View course announcements
Here are several helpful links:
Announcements
The Announcements have important information every day-it's important to always read them!
They include the following:
- tutorials to help you with understanding Chemistry
- a daily To Do List to help you stay on pace
- important course updates
- celebrations about you!
The Announcements are the first place you should look to get help with a topic!
Revision of Submitted Work
Feedback provided on assignments will be specific and tailored to help students correct any misconceptions. Students are encouraged to show all work for any problems that involve math including how they set up a problem, solved equations, and calculations performed.
Revised assignments must be submitted by the assigned due dates or they will incur late penalties. In order for feedback to have it maximum effect, the revisions must occur within a few days of the original submissions. Students are encouraged to submit work earlier in the week so that they have the maximum opportunity to revise work after reviewing feedback.
How to View Feedback on Your Assignments
The Final Exam
Students whose school systems require them to complete the course prior to this date should work ahead to meet their individual school's deadlines.
When students take the final exam, the school will provide a scientific calculator and the chemistry reference sheet.
Enabling Mixed Content
In Canvas you must enable mixed content on most browsers. It's important to be a diligent reader-if a slide says "view the video below" but there isn't one showing, you must enable mixed content.
Here is a screencast to walk you through it with Firefox, Chrome, and Internet Explorer.
