It was wonderful meeting you all at Curriculum Night! Thanks so much for coming. We have a few important dates coming up in Social Studies. As you know, the 9/11 parent/adult interview is due tomorrow, September 10th, in preparation for our class discussions and events on Patriot Day (9/11). The second half of the geography vocabulary flashcards are due Friday, 9/13 and we have pushed our Environmental Issues test back to Wednesday, 9/18. Don’t forget, all class information and resources can be found on Google Classroom, Classwork tab, Geography Resource Document. You will need your child or their login information to access this document. Please encourage your child to check their own grades in Infinite Campus, and encourage them to use our online textbook as a resource as they prepare for their test. Thank you for your continued support! Have a great week!

We will have a quiz on four reading strategies on Wednesday, September 11 using the story, “Thank You Ma’m” by Langston Hughes. Students have received a study guide and have access to information on Google Classroom and in their own binders.
Language Arts
ELA is continuing our journey through our first unit. By using a whole-class short story as a mentor text, we have delved into a study of characterization – the process in which authors craft relatable, believable, and realistic characters. We have discussed specific strategies by which students can determine the character traits of a character. We will be having students practice the skills they are learning in class through the creation of a body biography – a visual collage made up of both symbols and writing in which students take a critical look at a character from our short story and analyze him/her.
Book clubs will be starting in class on September 19! Please have students bring their unread chosen novel to class on this date. Students will be receiving more information about the book club options in class this week. Please see the previously sent email from your child’s individual teacher for more information regarding each course’s choices.
Thank you!

Spanish
¡Hola a los padres!
We have just finished up the first grammar section about nouns and articles of our first unit, Lección 1. As we move forward, the unit will cover numbers, the verb ser (to be), and telling time. Also this month, students will be learning how to use our classroom language labs for speaking tasks. Students will use the labs for practice in class as well as for our first upcoming major assessment, which is the PBA (Performance-Based Assessment). Your child will be able to show what they can do in the language with speaking skills. As a reminder, please have your child study vocabulary and notes at least 20 minutes per day. We hold help sessions on Tuesdays from 8-8:30am. In addition, we have added help sessions on Fridays from 8-8:30am by appointment. If your child would like to attend a Friday session, they must notify their Spanish teacher by Thursday of a given week. As always, study and practice resources can be found on Google Classroom and the textbook website component, VHL Central. Thank you for your support from home as your child continues their journey en español!
Muchas gracias,
Srta. Brown; Sra. Clark; Srta. Underwood

The textbook can be accessed through their online accounts, too. We will have a quiz at the end of the lesson. If your child has any outstanding assigned VHL activities, please encourage them to complete them at home.
