Word of the Month: Honorable

Dear McClure families,

It is May! It is so hard to believe that this year has flown by this fast. Monday, May 3 is the 154th day of school. Thank you for your commitment to your child's academics these last 154 days. It has been so difficult to teach and learn during a pandemic. You, your student, and our staff are to be commended on your efforts. Now more than ever before it is time to finish strong. Keep up your student's attendance and keep having students log into their daily online learning. Please watch for summer session invites. We are working at offering summer school to over 200 of our McClure students.

Our goal this year is to ensure that every student attends school regularly whether it is in person or remotely.

We realize some absences are unavoidable due to health problems or other circumstances. But, we also know that when students miss too much school — regardless of the reason — it can cause them to fall behind academically. Research shows:

  • Children chronically absent in kindergarten and 1st grade are much less likely to read at grade level by the end of 3rd grade.

  • By 6th grade, chronic absence is a proven early warning sign for students at risk for dropping out of school.

By 9th grade, good attendance can predict graduation rates even better than 8th grade test scores. Our goal this year is to ensure that every student attends school regularly whether it is in person or remotely. If you have any questions, please call Jay at 573-1300.

DIBELS Testing

Students will complete their DIBELS testing in person between May 10th-21st. Please make sure your child gets a good night's sleep and eats breakfast the morning of the test. Also, please remind them to do their best.

Going to school regularly matters!

Here are a few practical tips to help support regular attendance:

  • Make sure your children keep a regular bedtime and establish a morning routine.

  • Lay out clothes and pack backpacks the night before.

  • Ensure your children go to school every day unless they are sick.

  • Avoid scheduling vacations or doctor’s appointments when school is in session.

  • Talk to teachers and counselors for advice if your children feel anxious about going to school.

  • Develop back up plans for getting to school or logging in if something comes up. Call on a family member, neighbor, or another parent to take your child to school or help them log in to class.

PTA is doing a Family Fun Festival on May 14th @ McClure 6:00pm to 7:30 p.m. We will have 5 "Trucks" that will giveaway Books, Toys, Glow Sticks, Popcorn and Root Beer Floats on the black top and create safe social distancing for students and families to interact with each other. There will also be a photo booth and chalk art station.
