Need to Know Day Held on Nov. 16
On Wednesday, November 16, we held our first annual Need to Know Day – a day designed to teach students practical knowledge and skills that are of interest to them.
Students attended sessions on various topics including How to Get and Keep a Job, Financial Wellness, Starting Your Own Business, Dress for Success, Changing a Car Tire and Oil, Buying and Caring for a Car, Effective Ways to Destress, Maintaining Healthy Relationships, Intro to Coding, and 50 Minutes to a Fresh Start (how to stay organized in school).
There were also sessions on various hobbies including Intro to Crochet, Barbel Strength Training, Taking Great Photos, What’s Inside a PC?, How to Read Manga, Yoga, Adirondack Adventure and Pie Making. Session topics were chosen based on survey feedback from students.
Several SVHS teachers offered sessions, and we were also very fortunate to have several wonderful presenters from local businesses and universities participate, including:
- Kristen Burgeious, Adirondack Bank
- Amy Dewan, RCIL
- Cristina Ferdinand, First Source
- Amanda Fiore, Empowered Pathways CNY
- Lyn Geigel, RCIL
- Stephanie Madia, NYS Labor Department
- Marlene Muniz, RCIL
- Yue Riesbeck, MVCC
- Lori Robinson, NYS Labor Department
- Kevin Siembab, MVCC
- Sam Vincent, Utica University
The day would not have been possible without the contributions of the SVHS teachers and these outside presenters. Thank you and job well done!

Fall Student Athletes Compete at the State Level
Congratulations to the Girls Varsity Soccer team for competing in the State Finals! The team worked hard all year and earned its State Finalist recognition!
Congratulations also to the Boys Varsity Cross Country team for finishing 4th in New York State! Special congratulations to Kole Owens for finishing 4th in NYS in individual competition!
The teams were honored at a pep rally on Tuesday, November 22. Thank you to our fall student athletes for representing our school community well, and good luck to our winter student athletes!
CONGRATS TO MAMMA MIA CAST & CREW!
From Mr. Decker: Mamma Mia was a smashing success. Drawing well over 1,100 audience goers between the three shows, the SV Drama club were great ambassadors of our school to the community and the Mohawk Valley. It was a great way to kick off a very busy winter of music events and the other directors and myself are very proud of all the work they put into the production.
SVHS PARTNERS WITH SCHOOL AND BUSINESS ALLIANCE
This year, we are very fortunate to be partnering with the School and Business Alliance (SABA) – an organization through our local BOCES that works to connect students with local college and career opportunities. Here are some of the activities that SABA is helping us coordinate:
- Interest Inventories – In late September, each student completed an Interest Inventory to identify potential career fields of interest to them. The counselors will be provided with the results of the surveys to inform their individual discussions with students.
- Career Shadowing – SABA will coordinate a half-day or full-day job shadowing opportunity for any junior or senior who is interested in the opportunity.
- Career Internships – Juniors and seniors who are interested in following up their career shadowing experience with a 20-hour internship will have the opportunity to do so.
- Career Tours – Students will be able to sign up to attend field trips to local businesses such as Wolfspeed, Indium, and HMI.
- College Tours – Students will have the opportunity to attend field trips to local colleges and universities.
- Career Speakers – SABA provides us access to professionals from virtually any field who are willing to come to our school and speak about their experiences with our students. Representatives from Wolfspeed will be visiting in early December to share information with interested students.
- Career Development Lessons – SABA provides lesson plans on topics including job applications, resume writing, cover letter writing, interviewing, new hire guidelines, and professionalism. These lesson plans are available to our teachers for integration into their curricula.
We are grateful for this worthwhile alliance with SABA and look forward to it benefitting our students for years to come!
Investigator Touissant Shares Knowledge with Students
On Wednesday, November 2, we were pleased to welcome Investigator Greg Touissant of the Oriskany Police Department to our school for an assembly. Investigator Touissant also is a Senior Specialist with a threat mitigation company. He joined us to present on the important topic of being safe in the online environment. Topics in his presentation included understanding that online and cell phone behavior is never private, how to protect yourself from online predators, understanding the dangers associated with sexting, how your online profile and posts can affect your life, and understanding the effects of cyberbullying. We were very grateful for Investigator Touissant joining us and sharing this important information.
"Leaf"-ing grateful!
Our students showed their appreciation for friends, families, teachers and other good things this Thanksgiving season by contributing their "thankful thoughts" to the library's wall of gratitude.
