October 16th Mid-Month News
Principal's Message
Dear University Elementary Families,
A special thank you to those that came forward to work on writing our school vision in simpler terms. We came up with the following:
At University Elementary we are a joyful and diverse learning community working to promote collaboration, positive relationships, and rigorous project-based education in and beyond the classroom. We strive to empower all students to become active, curious, creative, and effective thinkers.
We will now share the edited version with Site Council, PTA Members, ELAC and staff. Anyone wishing to provide input is welcome to join us at any of these meetings. Parents are stakeholders. We truly value the input of all stakeholders. The previous vision statement will become our school philosophy assuming we are all in agreement.
Due to illness, last week's School Site Council meeting was postponed to Monday, October 21st at 3:30p. I would like to thank Katie Drewieske for stepping up as our second official Site Council parent member along with Christina Blount who joined us last year for this two year commitment.
Mr. Kurada's class won the Golden Sneaker again this week. The Golden Sneaker is awarded to the class with the most walkers each Wednesday. The first Wednesday of each month we will have prizes for students. Remember to have your student stop by Mrs. Straub out front or a teacher on duty on the playground to get their sticker signifying that they walked to school on Wednesdays.
Last but not least, please check out our new outdoor display cases. The case by the office will hold school news, including PTA announcements. The remaining cases will hold current classroom work and documentation of PBL projects. Thank you PTA for your contribution!
Best regards,
Charlotte Straub - Principal
PARKING LOT
It has come to my attention that our parking lot continues to be problematic. The past seven years we have brainstormed and worked with all our stakeholders to improve our parking lot situation. The current arrows are the best we have come up with even if it means that people have to go around again to get out of the parking lot. With regards to dropping off and picking up, if parents of students grades 3rd-5th could drop off and pick up on the Lady Bug Park side of the parking lot, along red curb, that would ease traffic at the entrance. I have also suggested a staggered drop off, where the older students are dropped off at 8:05am and the younger students at 8:12am. This allows all students to join in on the morning walk and get to class on time. Our kindergarten parents need to walk their students in. The kindergarten teachers open their doors at 8:05am.
I would also like to ask that parents and guardians do not park in our handicapped zones without a parking placard. We have two families that pick up students with physical disabilities who need to park in the designated spots in order to get students to the car. Thank you for your cooperation. I am happy to discuss this further at any of our scheduled meetings or 2nd Cup of Coffee.

School Clubs
We had a huge turn out for the Upstander's Club. There were more than seventy students. The group was so huge that we had to divide them into two groups, a 2nd/3rd grade club and a 4th/5th grade group. Yay for all the interested students!
