St Bernadette's Primary School
NEWSLETTER | TERM 3 | WEEK 1| 22 July 2022
Message from Geordie
Good afternoon and welcome back to all our amazing St Bernie’s Families,
I hope you all had a fun-filled holiday break. I have already heard many stories of trips up north to Coral Bay, fishing trips and flights to watch the footy in Melbourne.
Thanks to all our parents for returning our students in excellent form – happy, well rested, and enthusiastic! Our teachers have ensured that students are organised, working hard and engaged from Day 1 - our classrooms have been full of excitement.
I would like to welcome our new families to St Bernie’s. We hope that your first week has been a successful one with new friendships made.
This term in our middle and upper primary classes, we are continuing to implement the Lexile Reading Program with all our students. Our students are going to the library regularly and will be bringing home books at their reading level. After each book has been read the students can access short quizzes to check their comprehension. I ask that parents support and encourage students to read these books and change them over regularly.
The library is also open for students to change books each morning from 8:35 to 8:50am. Students who are on the Lexile program are also able to change their books from 1:20-1:40pm Monday through Thursday.
In order to access the library, your child needs a waterproof library bag please. The school library bags can be purchased from Hot Klobba for $15. There has been a huge commitment to building our library collection and new, exciting and requested titles are being added regularly. Later in the year we will be organising a Parent Info Session so that parents can come and learn how to better support their child’s reading progress using the program at home.
We also have to give a thank you to the very generous families who have donated they’re good quality, no longer needed books! With the support of our P&F and families, we have been able to update and modernise our library resources.

Crunch and Sip
The staff have had a very lengthy discussion regarding Crunch and Sip. Since we removed Crunch and Sip, teachers have noticed, that most of the student’s hunger and concentration has not been an issue in class. It has also been observed that some students are eating more fruit and vegetables at recess, fruit and vegetable that would have normally been eaten during class time.
Taking this into account and to ensure we make the most of our teaching and learning time, staff have decided to not reinstate crunch and sip. However, if for any reason, you child needs to consume fruit or vegetables during the morning session, please make an appointment to discuss this with the class teacher. Children will still be encouraged to bring the water bottles in to class each day.
Thanks in advance for your support.
Office Pass
To ensure the safety of students, we have advised students that they need to go and see a staff member on duty before they head to administration during recess and lunch. If they have spoken to a staff member on duty, and they still need to attend the office, the staff member will give them an office pass. Students are then allowed to attend the office as per normal.
