In the Classroom

It's an exciting week in first grade! This week we are learning how children in other countries celebrate Christmas by traveling to other classrooms! Each student will receive a passport and travel around the world, landing in another country every time they visit a classroom. They will visit the United States, Germany, Mexico, Italy, and Japan!

Learning This Week

Word Work- This week's sight words are: have, little, ask, out, what. This week's word pattern is -out (pout, shout, scout, about, etc.)

Reading- This week students will ask and answer questions before, during, and after a fiction story. Student will also retell important important events and the central message in a fiction story. By the end of first grade, students should be able to describe characters, setting, major events, and central message using key details and illustrations.

Writing- This week students will write narrative stories about themselves. Students can choose from many different themes, including Christmas. By the end of first grade students should be able to write narrative stories with sequenced events, details, transitional words, and a closure.

Math- Students will continue exploring place value concepts, including comparing numbers. By the end of first grade, students should be able to read, write and represent 2-digit numbers as tens and ones.

Social Studies- This week students are traveling the world to learn about how children in different countries celebrate Christmas!

Attendance

Last week's class attendance: 97.09%

Our attendance goal for Sweeny is 96% or higher attendance. In our classroom, we are trying to earn an attendance celebration. Every day that we have 100% attendance we earn a letter. When we spell "perfect attendance," we will celebrate! "If you're not at school, you're not learning!"
