Definition: EMPATHY--The ability to understand and share the feelings of another.

"We must understand before we judge."

Jim Sewald--5th grade Teacher

I was born and raised in St. Paul, Minnesota. I attended college at the University of St. Thomas. I worked in the retail jewelry business for ten years and later became a police officer in the Eagan, MN Police Department and retired as a captain. While there I was a part-time instructor at the police academy. I moved to Texas in 1999 and in 2006 started teaching 6th grade at Colin Powell Intermediate School. From there I went to Hackberry Elementary and currently here at Chavez. I have a wife, two sons, one daughter and three step-sons. I enjoy sports, exercise and traveling.

Chavez Counselor, Kylie Robinson put together a great Career Day for Chavez students. Our students look forward to learning about different careers fields. As usual we had a great turnout from our community members who so graciously gave of their time to share with our students. We are thankful to have such a supportive community who supports our student learning.

First Graders Present "Author's Chair"

First graders in Mrs. Everman's culminated their three week writing unit with "Author's Chair". Students worked very hard to prepare their stories as parents and administrators were invited to participate in the audience. Mrs. Everman was so proud of her students and the hard work they put into their craft.

This is a process that starts with the book "Rocket Writes a Story" and how Rocket learns the steps he needs to take in order to make a story. Then it is broken down into specific steps. Way to go Mrs. Everman's students! We wer all impressed.

Please bring your family to our New Kindergarten Parent Meeting on Tuesday, May 12, 2015, at 6:30pm in the cafeteria . This will give our new families an opportunity to meet our kindergarten team and receive information to prepare their child for the 2015--2016 school year. Looking forward to a great turnout. The meeting will take place in the cafeteria following the Chavez Choir Concert.

Percussion Performance

Mr. Duc and his students presented the "Annual Percussion Performance" this past Tuesday. The students did a fabulous job with a variety of percussion instruments. It is such a privilege for our students to get excellent teaching from Mr. Duc in these instruments. Their music is such a joy to hear and it is obvious they had fun performing for the audience.

Mrs. Pruitt's Class Writes and Performs Short Stories

Each group read a children's book and used their knowledge of parts of a drama to create a script based on their book. Then they worked on creating props and staging their mini productions. Some of the students even memorized their scripts. They worked on this assignment from beginning to end for 5 days. We invited the Superintendent, Dr. Strike, as well as Mr. Lowman, Mr. Brown and our students families to join us for our performance. The kids did an outstanding job from start to finish!
