A Message from Principal Williams

November 19, 2022

Dear Amazing Moorefield Station Families,

Brr! The temperatures have made a sudden drop! I hope that you are somewhere warm and cozy, and enjoying a great weekend! As a reminder, LCPS will be closed from Wednesday, November 23rd-Friday, November 25th, in observance of the Thanksgiving Holiday. I will resume my weekly message on Saturday, December 3rd.

This week, my administrative team and I hosted a gathering with our Kindergarten, 3rd, and 4th grade students to talk about exhibiting our SHARK values all around the school.

When we return from the Thanksgiving holiday, we will begin the Big Chip Challenge. Classes will earn a "Big Chip" by displaying Shark Behavior during their Specials Classes (Art, P.E., Music, and Library). Classes will work to earn their way to a glow stick dance party that will take place during the school day. More details will be shared with students after the break.

As I have shared in prior messages, each month, teachers give the Shark of the Month Award to a student from their class. In November, the focus is on Achieving (finding positive solutions)!

Smart Choice-I walk away from problem situations and ask a trusted adult for help.

Helpful- I stand up for myself and others

Achieve- I find a positive solution (November focus for Shark of the Month Award)

Responsible- I know when to talk to a trusted adult for help

Kind- I use respectful words, actions, and body language

Our focus remains on providing students with high-quality instruction and equitable access to Deeper Learning through the 5Cs (Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Contribution, Critical Thinking). This week, our teachers collaborated with our Computer Science Instructional Facilitator with a focus on the integration of Computational Thinking into student learning. December 5th begins Computer Science Education Week, and there will be lots of opportunities for students to further engage in CS here at school.

This week's message includes information about the PTO Winter Wonderland Party, opportunities to donate a $25 gift card to Shark Families in need, and so much more!

Have a Great Weekend!

Paula Williams, Principal

STUDENT ASSESSMENTS:

Assessment is an integral part of the teaching and learning process. Teachers give assessments to students to check for understanding and to gather information about students' knowledge or skills, which further guides instructional practices.

Please view the link below for an overview of assessments by grade level.

ON TIME SCHOOL ARRIVAL:

We open our doors to welcome students at 7:10, and our tardy bell rings at 7:30. We want to be sure that students have a positive learning day, and that begins with arriving to school on time.

If you drive your child to school and arrive at or after 7:30 a.m., I ask that you please walk them to the front doors of the school, as that is the time that our Car Rider Staff Members will enter the building to begin their instructional responsibilities.

Please note: If bus riders arrive to school late, they are not marked tardy.

PREARRANGED ABSENCES:

In accordance with Regulation 8140, parents and guardians are encouraged to minimize absences during the school year, and to plan family trips and vacations during school holidays.

Due to various demands on teachers for make-up work, teachers will not be expected to provide classwork or assignments for students that take family trips or vacations during the regular school year.

FROM OUR PARENT LIAISON:

PROFILE OF AN LCPS GRADUATE & THE 5 C's

The Profile of an LCPS Graduate encompasses what's called the 5 C’s (listed below). As we continue to place students at the center of our work to prepare them to make meaningful contributions to the world, we will integrate the 5C’s into our daily learning, and I wanted to share them with our families:

COLLABORATOR

Collaborators work with and learn from others to interdependently solve problems, achieve goals, and complete tasks, while showing respect for diverse perspectives, remaining open to ideas, and learning to compromise.

CREATOR

Creators generate new ideas and/or build on existing ones by asking questions, thinking flexibly, and learning from experimentation, which leads to innovative approaches and solutions to authentic challenging problems.

CONTRIBUTOR

Contributors engage in work to impact the community (local, regional, global) by building awareness, utilizing resources, and/or developing solutions to authentic, challenging problems.

CRITICAL THINKER

Critical Thinkers analyze, question and synthesize ideas to evaluate information, make inferences, draw conclusions, establish patterns and connections, or solve problems.

COMMUNICATOR

Communicators express ideas clearly, use active listening skills, and anticipate and adjust to audience types, purposes, and settings, using appropriate resources to enhance that expression.
