Around the School
The 4th and 5th grade students from both Bruneau and Grand View Elementary schools were able to attend a special Boise Philharmonic children’s concert on Wednesday, February 13th at the Morrison Center. The orchestra played excerpts from Firebird Suite, a ballet composed by Russian composer Igor Stravinsky, in the early 1900s.
Following the concert, students were able to tour our beautiful state capitol building and learn more about our 3 branches of government. Pictured is Representative Raymond telling the students about his duties as an elected official.
Caught Using Kelso's Choices!
Classroom Corner
Mrs. Lawrence (Fourth): The 4th graders are currently learning about the pioneers who traveled on the Oregon Trail. Each student has been given a character to portray while traveling on a pretend trip to Oregon. Students are practicing how to identify and write main ideas with supporting details while reading different books about the pioneers. It will be interesting to find out if everyone makes it to Oregon!
Mrs. King (Fifth): The fifth graders have just wrapped up our unit of water conservation in ELA. We ended it by having groups make and present posters to the class. We are now entering the Wild Wild West and learning about how the West was settled and how cowboys lived during that time. In math, we have been digging into fractions and now learning how to multiply and divide them!

At Home
Our students have been working with Tom Thelen's VictimProof curriculum again this year in order to work on our sense of community, climate, and culture within our schools. Remember, climate is how it feels in the school, while culture is what we do.
In Chapter 1 of VictimProof, we learn that Tom has some secrets of success to share with us! Tom tells us that he first got help from an adult, and then he learned to let go of the pain he had through forgiveness. Tom shared that he believes that both of these steps are necessary to lead a healthy and safe life.
Although it may be difficult, it is important to take the pain from your past and turn it into a positive thing. We can use that pain to help others, instead of staying bitter. The opposite of bitterness is forgiveness- letting go of our pain and being willing to move on. Students have been talking and sharing about the benefits to forgiveness over bitterness in community groups the past few weeks.
Some Questions You Can Ask at Home:
- What do you think it means for someone to be "VictimProof?"
- Why do you think victims of bullying often turn into bullies?
- What happens when you hold onto bitterness and unforgiveness?
- How is forgiveness like setting yourself free?
- How can you help your friends at school become VictimProof?
