Firebird Flash

Proud to Be Your Principal
Happy *snowy* Friday everyone - another great week in the books! We had a fantastic kick-off assembly this afternoon for next month's Color Run, and we're confident our students are going to do a terrific job representing our school. Remember - for every $30 raised for our schools, students get a friend or family member into the race for free! It's a great opportunity to support our schools and Firebird community.
Don't forget to stop by our local McDonalds next Wednesday, and grab a bite to eat with the family! A portion of sales made that evening will go towards our schools. You might even have a teacher that you know serve your fries!!
Proud to be your principal,
Tornado Awareness Week
- Have a pre-designated shelter, such as a basement, where you can move in the event of severe weather. If you can, get under a sturdy table or under the stairs for best protection. Click here for information on "safe rooms."
- If your home does not have a basement, move to a small interior room on the lowest floor and cover yourself (and help young children) with towels, blankets, or pillows. If possible, get under a sturdy desk, table, or counter. Put as many walls as possible between you and the storm. Stay away from windows.
- If caught outdoors, seek shelter in a sturdy building. If you cannot quickly walk to shelter, get into a vehicle, buckle your seatbelt, and drive to the closest sturdy shelter. If flying debris occurs while you are driving, pull over and park. Two last resorts are to stay in the vehicle and place your head below the window level, or if you can get noticeably lower than the roadway, exit the vehicle and lie in that area, covering your head with your hands. Do not seek shelter under an overpass.
- Mobile homes, even if tied down, offer little protection from tornadoes. You should leave a mobile home and go to the designated storm shelter or the lowest floor of a sturdy nearby building.
- Make sure you have multiple ways to receive weather information. A NOAA weather radio, access to local TV, and smart phone apps can keep you informed when severe weather threatens.

How it works: You and your child can work to raise sponsorships/donations, and for every $30 your child collects, you get up to 6 FREE registration for the Color Run! This can be for family members or friends!
Students can also earn prizes based on how much they raise. These items are "bling" to add to the fun of the Color Run! Be sure to sign-up online so you can reach out to family members that live far away! The website is located on the Color Run Packet that was sent home today - please be sure to read the envelope for additional information!

April is Autism Awareness Month
For the past two school years, I have used the month of April to share facts and statistics about autism to help create a culture of awareness and understanding here at Minocqua J1 Schools. This year, I would like our school family to focus on acceptance.
Acceptance is as simple as taking the time to learn about your classmates, and possibly making a new friend. All month long I am asking all students and staff to send me any questions they may have about our students with autism, and I will post a response either daily or weekly on the bulletin board outside room #135, depending upon the number of questions I receive.
With this in mind, I hope everyone takes the opportunity this month to learn about someone in your class or neighborhood who has autism. It might just turn out that this is the best friend you will ever have!

"Counseling Corner"
While your child is still too young to vote in upcoming elections, the political season can offer some great topics for you and your teen to connect on. Teens love to have their opinions be known and it isn’t too early to build excitement and encourage your child to become active in civic issues.
Be an eParent®! The next time your child is online, ask them to research the positions of competing local or state candidates on an issue. Pick an issue that directly affects your teen such as education. Or pick a topic the two of you may have differing opinions on. Ask how they feel about this current issue; listen carefully and ask questions that help your child think deeper about the issue (How might a candidate’s position on this topic affect you? our family? our town?) Look up facts on issues together – remember, it’s not about being right or wrong. Rather, this is a chance to understand one another’s perspectives and find actions to take together to advocate for your viewpoints.
Use these resources to get ideas on how to talk about politics with your teen and teach your teen about the elections.
