The Contemporary Central American and Child Migrant Experience
Her 2017 book, The Far Away Brothers: Two Young Migrants and the Making of an American Life, chronicles the experiences of twin teenagers from El Salvador who grew up in the wake of the country's civil war and in tandem with the rise of local gangs, which force them to flee to the United States for safety. It is a book that examines the violence of borders, the long shadow of U.S. foreign policy in Central America, the big business of immigration detention, and the exclusion young immigrants face in U.S. communities and schools. The Far Away Brothers was the winner of the Ridenhour Prize, the Northern California Book Award, the California Book Award Silver Prize, and was named a Critic's Pick by the New York Times Book Review.
