Jim Thorpe

An Olympic Controversy


Jim Thorpe is an athlete of Native American decent who won two Olympic gold medals in the pentathlon and decathlon. He also played American Football and Minor League Baseball. Because he played Minor League baseball, Thorpe was stripped of his medals due to his violation of the Amateurism rule of the Olympics.

  • In a poll made by ABC sports, Jim Thorpe was voted the greatest athlete of the twentieth century beating many athletes including Mohammad Ali, Babe Ruth, Michael Jordan and Jack Nicklaus.
  • Jim Thorpe is the only player in history to play for the New York Giants in two different sports, in baseball and football.
  • There is a town in Pennsylvania called Jim Thorpe. A monument was made in his honor and it is where his ashes are buried.
