PATRIOT PARENT POST
by Principal Kate Wyman
Welcome to the month of March! These cold temperatures sure do not feel like March, but each day is one step closer to Spring-like weather. The month of March is a very busy month in our building. We have several opportunities for families to join us both in our building and in the community as we support Jefferson School.
We are excited to see all of our Patriots at Culver's Night tomorrow, March 4 from 4-8pm or at Chipotle in East Peoria on March 11th from 5-9pm. We hope you can stop by for dinner or a treat. All proceeds benefit the Jefferson School playground fund.
This Thursday, March 7 is Jefferson's Open House from 6-7:30pm. The students have been busy preparing for this evening showcasing all they are learning in their classrooms. The Scholastic Book Fair will be in the gym. It will be open for you to shop for new books to add to your home library. Kona Ice will be outside and ready to serve you a treat after you've visited your classroom(s) and book fair. Hope to see you on Thursday!
Our 3rd-6th grade students will participate in the IAR (formerly PARCC) assessments from March 18-April 12. More information, including a parent letter and testing schedule, will be sent prior to the testing window. We encourage your child(ren) to participate in assessment and do their best. We utilize this data to inform our practices and teaching.
Our student ambassadors have planned a Spirit Week for the week of March 25-29. See the flyer attached to the email for more specifics.
Monday - You're as Bright as a Star
Tuesday - You are a Smarty Pants
Wednesday - Keep Calm & Test On
Thursday - Your Brain is Working So Hard
Friday - You're the Real MVP
There is a lot going on and we invite you to join us for another busy month!

FROM MRS. HOBSON'S DESK!!
Mrs. Hobson's HELPFUL LINKS FOR HOME
Watch the following video and talk with your child about what their perfect recipe for friendship is: http://www.thenedshow.com/building-relationships-lesson-plans.html
Watch the following story and talk about understanding people who are different from you and how to make new friends: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQbO9h8cRyw
Watch the following story and talk about working with people we don’t get along with and how to have a cooperative working relationship: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUo-SY8KsM8
Watch the following story and talk about how your child is different from their friends. What are some things they have in common and what are some things that are different about them? Is it okay to have a friend who is different from you? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_Mn-3x83eU
Talk with your child about what characteristics they are looking for in a friend and how they know when they have a friend. Ask them what characteristics they are currently bringing to their friendships and what they could continue to work on in their friendships. If your child is older, talk with them about the difference between friends and “frenemies”. Frenemies are people who we may be friendly with but deep down there is a dislike for the person or the person does not treat us well, like a friend should. If you are concerned about one or more of your child’s friends, now is a great time to bring up that discussion.
MARCH - Book of the Month
Silly is used to feeling left out. Her three older sisters think she's too little for most things—especially when it comes to dealing with their mother's unpredictable moods and outbursts. This summer, Silly feels more alone than ever when her sisters keep whispering and sneaking away to their rooms together, returning with signs that something mysterious is afoot: sporting sunburned cheeks smudged with glitter and gold hair that looks like tinsel.
When Silly is brought into her sisters' world, the truth is more exciting than she ever imagined. The sisters have discovered a magical place that gives them what they truly need: an escape from the complications of their home life. But there are dark truths there, too. Silly hopes the magic will be the secret to saving their family, but she's soon forced to wonder if it could tear them apart.

SHOP WITH SCRIP ANYTIME !!!
What is SCRIP? SCRIP is simply gift cards that you purchase from the PTO that you then use at your favorite retailers, like Wal-Mart, Starbucks, Target, and many more. These gift cards carry a rebate that goes towards our school. The rebates can add up quickly, and all proceeds will go toward our NEW playground! The only thing you need to do is plan your purchases and make them with our gift cards instead of cash or checks. The gift cards make great gifts this holiday season too! Everyone wins! Be on the lookout for an order form to be sent home next week!!
