WHS Random Acts of Kindness: Be The Joy!
Winter Weather
Some general E-Learning guidelines in case of future inclement weather are:
- Teachers will post their lessons to Canvas by 9:00 AM
- Students will have 48 hours (2 school days) following the school cancellation day to submit their work.
- Teachers will be responsive to Canvas messages, TalkingPoints messages and their school email through the instructional day.
- Attendance will be taken through Canvas.
- For students who may not have technology at home or have IT difficulties at home, WHS will provide work times following the e-learning day.
Attendance Nook
The goal for ALL students is to attend school at a rate of 94% or higher, which equates to not missing more than 10 days (not including holidays and breaks, which do not factor into the 180 day school term). This is a high expectation, but this expectation also supports the high school mission of preparing all students for Life Readiness; employees in private industry (roughly 85% of all American workers) have nearly the exact same percentage expectation for regular attendance early in their careers, as evidenced by this data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. On a 260 day, full year contract (that does not have built-in breaks like school does), employees are expected to miss no more than 18 days per year, equating to roughly 93.1% attendance.

It started the 21st on Robbie’s Birthday and will end February 7th. What can you be doing? We have a little challenge for all of the Westfield High School students going on! Send us a photo of you wearing your merch to receive a cookie or a photo of you wearing your wristband for a lollipop! You can also reach out to adults or friends in your life to spread the message about mental health awareness. One other thing you can do is give a donation to the national organization at @robbieshope1 or through this link. For more information about Robbie’s Hope and its mission visit the website here.

C/O 2024: Hoosier Boys and Girls State Opportunity
Attention Class of 2024! Each year we send a few of our best and brightest juniors to Hoosier Boys and Girls State to represent Westfield High School. The program is designed for students to learn and experience how the government works throughout a week-long summer program at Trine University. If you are interested, click the following links to access the
applications:
Hoosier Girls State WHS Application
Hoosier Boys State WHS Application
Applications can be electronically sent to Mrs. Corya or brought to the Counseling Center. They are due by February 17th.
For more information on these programs, go to www.hoosierboysstate.org or
Hoosier Girls State. Contact Lyndsay Corya (coryal@wws.k12.in.us) with questions.
If a student misses a day of school, it is their responsibility to check canvas, communicate with their teachers and make up assessments in the Testing Center (during CORE or after school). Communication is key.
Parking Permit Waitlist
Student drivers: All available parking permits have been issued for the year. A waitlist has been created. To get on the waitlist, please complete the online registration form, and then you MUST bring your valid Driver's license to Mrs. Flickinger at the Information Desk in the Main Office. Completing the online registration alone does not automatically put you on the waitlist or guarantee you a parking permit. Students on the waitlist will be notified on a first come first
serve basis as spots become available.
For more details, be sure to see the information on our website regarding Parking Permits. If you have any questions, please email Mr. Harris at harrisd@wws.k12.in.us or Mr. Scanlon at scanlonk@wws.k12.in.us.
School Day SAT-Juniors
The School Day SAT for all juniors will be administered on Thursday, March 2, 2023. Students do not need to register for this exam, as all members of the Class of 2024 will be taking it. (Please note that even students who plan to graduate at the end of their junior year are required to take this exam.)
The School Day SAT is a digital exam, and students will need to use their School-Owned Chromebooks on testing day. There will be a Pre-Administration Session in students' CORE classes on Monday, February 13. At this Pre-Administration Session, students will:
Complete some demographic information
Have the opportunity to choose up to four colleges to send their SAT scores to for free. (This is completely optional. However, there is a $13 fee to send their SAT scores to a college at a later date.)
Practice using the testing platform. They will have the chance to see what tools are built into the testing platform, including a calculator and highlighter, a place for digital notes, and how they can flag questions to go back to answer later.
The School Day SAT is a state-mandated exam, and replaces the previous ISTEP+ exams. Here's a quick video that discusses the SAT as the State of Indiana Assessment, and how scores can be used to meet Graduation Pathways.
The majority of students will take their SAT with their CORE teacher in their CORE classroom, however there are some exceptions. Each and every junior will receive an individualized note in the Pre-Administration Session that will specify their testing location and lead proctor.
January is Positivity & Purpose Month!
There are just a few more days in our Positivity and Purpose month!
Our CORE sessions this month will offered enrichment activities encompassing the Positivity & Purpose theme. Additionally, there is a monthly nomination form for those students and staff that demonstrate each of our monthly themes.
The students/staff that demonstrate positivity would see the best in themselves and in others. They have the trust and confidence to develop and grow a positive future and refuse to let setbacks or failures discourage them from reaching their goals. They focus on opportunities and what they can control.
Students/staff who demonstrate purpose would have a growth mindset and work hard. They take on challenges that stretch them and assess ideas and viewpoints. They inspire or spark others interest and enthusiasm.
