The Riebli Record
October 9, 2020
I cried this week. Yes, for the first time since Distance learning started, I cried. A first grader came to the office on Wednesday to give his teacher flowers. We said he could meet her and he responded with “I get to meet my teacher.” He had the biggest smile on his face and he was so excited to meet his teacher, even at 6 feet apart.
My heart broke that he was just “meeting his teacher” in person on October 7. Parents, I know that distance learning is hard. Making it to all the zooms. Turning in all the work on time. Monitoring the students taking tests. But, you are there to hug them because their teacher can not be. You are there to give the High fives because the teacher can not be. You are there to do the happy dance when they figure out the “hard thing” when their teacher can not be. YOU ARE THERE. Another great story from this week was a 5th grade parent sharing her struggles with her child. The student did not do well on the math test. The student was also resistant to showing the math work. They struggled to get through the learning curve about why you show your work, and the student persevered through the struggle. This student EARNED 100% on the test and saw the value in why we show our work. This a daily struggle in the classroom that teachers get to see students persevere through, you, as parents get to see the results.
My husband teases that I am the queen of putting on my “rose colored glasses” about everything. I am guilty of this. I want to see the good in all, except myself. I can get very down on myself. “Am I doing enough for my family?” “Am I spending enough time with Jasper?” “Am I supporting my staff enough?” “Am I helping my world out enough?”
We really need to take a moment and give ourselves some grace. Positive self talk is something I found works for me. Be PRESENT in the moment, honor your feelings, and tell yourself you are doing great. BECAUSE YOU ARE. You are there. You are hugging your student. You are aware of what they are working on. You are listening. You are helping them through the struggles. We have heard from parents that they feel they “are failing at distance learning.” Remember, we are the first in history to attempt this. WE ARE NOT FAILING!!!! We just have to try new things, change it up, and keep going. We PIVOT! Each time we PIVOT, it gets better. REMEMBER, this is a marathon, not a sprint. Go slow to go fast later. We are in this together.

Also, we are on campus, they provide a weekly lunch bunch where the students meet with adults from the community and discuss the meaning of CREW (Courage, Resiliant, Empowerment and Well Being). We want to bring this program to all Mark West Schools and ensure it continues when we return. Purchasing a ticket is the best way to make sure this program stays afloat.
