December Events - Parents Welcome
There are so many exciting activities happening at Bush Elementary over the next week that parents, grandparents, and family members are invited to attend. All adults must show a government issued photo identification to enter the building.
Parents are welcome to attend the following events:
- Thursday, December 15 at 8:30 a.m. – Fourth Grade Knowledge Fest
- Friday, December 16 at 8:00 a.m. – Spelling Bee – the winning spellers from 3rd – 5th grade will show off their spelling skills

- December 20 at 8:30 a.m. – Gr. 4 & 5 Choir Holiday Program
Safety at Bush Elementary
Safety is our core value. Students must be safe before they can learn. We have many events over the next few days that parents are invited to attend. Parents must have a government issued photo identification to show at the office to enter the building. Parents, grandparents, and other family members will not be allowed into the building without a government issued photo identification.
There will be quite a few parents attending these events and to speed up the check in process, please have your government issued photo identification in your hand when you enter the building.
Please respect our safety procedures and have your government issued photo identification on hand to enter the building.
Choir Road Tour
Yesterday, our fourth and fifth grade choir walked over to Parkway Place to share their holiday program with the residents. The students sang beautifully and the residents enjoyed the program. Thank you to Ms. Silva for working with our choir to produce an outstanding program. All students will see this program next week and parents are invited to attend the program. Parents must have government issued photo identification to enter the building.

PERFECT ATTENDANCE PARTY
We are planning a big party to celebrate every student who has perfect attendance for the fourth six-week marking period! Students will be invited to this party if they are at school every day between Monday, January 9th through Friday, February 24th. Let’s see how many Bush Bobcats we will have at our party! It is so important to be at school each and every day and we want to recognize our students who come to school every day and have perfect attendance.
PK Lottery for the 2023 - 2024 School Year
HISD runs all pre-kindergarten lotteries through their School Choice site on the HISD portal at https://www.houstonisd.org/Page/177890
Parents are able to submit applications online for their child to attend PK at Bush Elementary starting today through February 2, 2023. Parents will be notified if their child received a place in the lottery on April 5, 2023. Then, if the space is accepted, the student needs to be tested and paperwork checked to ensure the student qualifies for pre-kindergarten. Applications are only completed online and the Bush front office does not have any part in the PK lottery application process.
The pre-kindergarten program at Bush Elementary consists of one class of 22 students. Students must qualify for the program via a variety of means such as Limited English and Economically Disadvantaged. Students must also be 4 years old on or before September 1, 2023.
Lottery priority is given to siblings of students currently enrolled at Bush Elementary. Next, the students living in our school zone will be included in the lottery. Due to the limited space in our pre-kindergarten program, we are unable to have any students out of our school zone apply. Those applications will be removed from the Bush Elementary PK lottery.
Gifted and Talented Application Information
We will be conducting GT testing for first through fifth graders beginning January 10th. If you would like to have your child tested, please print out and complete the application below and turn it into Jessica Ayala in the front office by Monday, January 9. You may also ask your child’s teacher for a paper copy of the application.
The GT testing window this year runs from January 10th – February 11th. Students will be taking an abilities test and academic tests over several days. All testing will be on paper this year and will be administered during the school day. Results of this testing will be sent home sometime in late spring. If your child qualifies for the GT program, they will be placed in a GT homeroom for next school year.
All kindergarteners were tested for GT in November.

Has Your Child Lost a Jacket or Sweater?
We have many jackets and sweaters in our Lost and Found. If your child has misplaced a jacket or sweater, please have them come to check in the lost and found before next Wednesday. All unclaimed jackets will be donated to charity over the winter holiday. We do have some good news. Thanks to our wonderful PTO volunteers, all labeled jackets were returned to the children's classrooms today. Please make sure you label all jackets and sweaters with your child's first and last name so it can be returned to their classroom if it is lost.
Winter Break
Winter Break is from December 22 - January 6. We look forward to seeing all Bush Bobcats back on January 9, 2023 at 7:30 a.m.
COMMUNITY RESOURCES
SEL with Ms. Jones
Social Awareness is a person's ability to consider the perspectives of others, individuals, groups, and communities.
It is important for students to recognize that our differences help us to fit together in our community and help us share information, learn, and collaborate with others despite our differences.
The holidays are a great time to recognize cultural differences in how we celebrate all around the world.
Here are some things that you can do at home:
- Have the child research a variety of winter holidays and ask them to reflect on how the traditions are similar or different to their own.
- Buone Feste! This is how you say "Happy Holidays" in Italian. Teach child how to say season's greetings in other languages to learn diversity and spread good tiding to others.
- Find artifacts around the house that symbolize how their family celebrates the holidays, and they can bring to class to share about their family traditions.
When students learn about different cultures, traditions, and beliefs, they learn to appreciate diversity, have respect for others, and be more socially engaged and aware.
