Computer Science Through the Lens of Literacy

ELA Course of Study Exploration
This session will provide an opportunity for ELA teachers to become more familiar with the ELA Course of Study by exploring grade level standards with colleagues. Teachers will gain an understanding of the progression of skills from kindergarten to twelfth grade, while also noting the standards specific to the grade level they teach. While familiarizing themselves with the standards, teachers will engage in grade level collaboration in order to unpack the standards and build relevant lesson plans ready to use upon their return to their classroom.

ELA Proficiency Scales Overview
How do we know when a student shows proficiency of a standard? How do we know what skills are barriers between a student and their proficiency? How do we communicate these concepts to students and/or parents outside of grades? Proficiency scales will help us solve all of these conundrums. This session will provide an overview of the “Why” and “How” of proficiency scales. Teachers will look at the ELA proficiency scales specifically to determine how to best use them in their own classrooms. While all levels of understanding should benefit from this session, this is geared toward beginning learners in the world of proficiency scales.

Dyslexia Awareness Training – Dyslexia: An Overview (Face-to-Face)

Alabama's Teacher Observation Tool: An Overview for Administrators (ATOT)
Alabama Achieves, the strategic plan of the Alabama State Department of Education, specifically focuses on providing students with highly effective teachers. The ALSDE has partnered with Cognia in creating a teacher observation tool that provides educators with specific areas of strengths/growth and aligns with the Alabama Core Teaching Standards. The instrument also assists educators in developing professional development plans and choosing informed professional learning experiences. In this session, administrators will be able to Understand the Teacher Observation Tool Utilize the Teacher Observation Tool for classroom observation Calibrate scores on the Teacher Observation Tool.

National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Process
Looking for more information about becoming National Board Certified? Are you thinking about going through the National Board Certification process? Do you want to know more about the process and how to begin the journey? This session is designed to introduce the process in detail and to begin to help you map out a plan of approach to become certified. We will also discuss specific logistical requirements from the National Board as well as the opportunity to join the University of North Alabama NBCT Support Program to help guide you through the entire process from beginning to end.

Schoology is a learning management system that is available to all educators in Alabama. ACAP Cognitive Complexity Training
The primary purpose for the cognitive complexity training to learn about the cognitive complexity embedded with the Text-Dependent Writing prompts included in the English Language Arts ACAP Summative.

Alabama Pre-AP Readiness Workshops
UNA Regional Inservice Center is pleased to announce that we will be hosting Pre-AP Readiness Workshops in partnership with College Board. Pre-AP Readiness Workshops are in-person collaborative experiences that orient participants to the content, design, and pedagogy of the Pre-AP Program.
Teachers explore Pre-AP design and instructional content-specific topics that empower them to apply what they’ve learned to their own grade level or course within their content area.

Pre-AP English Language Arts: From Sentence to Synthesis
The Pre-AP English classroom trains students to craft complex sentences. By doing this, students build a foundation for complex thinking and for communicating ideas clearly. Students improve their reading comprehension through writing instruction and practice at the same time they learn to create clear sentences that incorporate textual evidence. By first concentrating on sentences and paragraphs, participants in this workshop learn how to help students acquire strong skills they can later use with essays and other types of writing.

TEAMS APPROVED! Pre-AP Mathematics: Using Higher-Order Questioning
The Pre-AP shared principles of higher-order questioning and academic conversation support student engagement in mathematical argumentation and building connections among multiple representations as tools to develop fluency through conceptual understanding. In this workshop, participants examine the characteristics of a classroom culture of questioning in which both students and teachers are actively engaged in the questioning process. Participants will actively engage in a Pre-AP model lesson focused on purposeful questioning and academic conversations, to examine characteristics of questions that motivate student thinking and promote student access to grade-level content.

Modeling is a core practice for scientists as they use a variety of models to develop, refine, and communicate their ideas. In this workshop, participants will actively engage in a Pre-AP model lesson with an attention to modeling. They will examine how the Pre-AP shared principles and science areas of focus support student engagement in science practices such as modeling and scientific argumentation. Participants will then consider how they can apply new learning within their own classroom context to support students in constructing and then modifying their own scientific knowledge as new information becomes available.

Pre-AP Social Studies: Fostering Shared Principles
This workshop addresses the shared principles that build readiness for high school and beyond: close observation and analysis, higher-order questioning, academic conversation, and evidence-based writing. Through engagement with model lessons from the Pre-AP World History and Geography course, participants will explore how these interconnected shared principles, in partnership with the social studies areas of focus, help all students work with primary and secondary sources in the way that historians do.

Picking Priorities and Meeting Students Where They Are At
- Individualized Behavior Approaches

NEUHAUS LANGUAGE ENRICHMENT
This class provides teachers 36 hours of training in the Science of Reading through opportunities to plan instruction to meet student needs in the context of their classroom while gaining knowledge on reliable reading and spelling patterns, development of oral language and world knowledge, and metacognitive strategies for comprehension. The coaching staff at Neuhaus will follow up with each participant during the school year to assist you as you apply what you have learned in your classroom to best fit the needs of your students. The first Cohort of teachers who participated in this professional learning opportunity increased their knowledge of the science of reading by an average of 19% over the course of the class. A prerequisite to this course is: Reading Readiness 6 hours, on demand- pre-recorded and must be completed prior to September 1, 2023. Research has demonstrated the importance of phonological awareness, letter recognition, and oral language in the acquisition of reading and spelling skills. Participants will learn foundational skills that are necessary to develop fluent readers and accurate spellers, and receive hands-on, multi-sensory activities to teach and reinforce these skills. This virtual class provides remote learning with real-time instruction from Neuhaus instructors.

Neuhaus Literacy Leadership Institute
School leaders face many demands each day ensuring that all students on their campus are growing in their capacity to become competent readers is a critical responsibility. Effective literacy leaders believe that all students can learn to read critically, have deep content knowledge about literacy instruction, understand how reading skills develop, recognize the need for explicit, systematic teaching of the key components of reading instruction, and build trust with coaches and teachers. Participants in the Neuhaus Literacy Leadership Institute course will develop an understanding of the key elements of reading instruction, how beginning skills develop, and how to enhance teachers’ use of effective teaching strategies within a Structured Literacy instructional routine.
