6th Grade TAG
7th Grade Core
Language Arts: In honor of April being National Poetry Month, 7th-grade Language Arts students have been learning about poetry, sound devices, and figurative language. T different elements of poetry we are learning about include: onomatopoeia, similes, metaphors, personification, hyperbole, rhythm, rhyme and repetition. Seventh graders have studied a variety of styles poems by many famous poets to learn these devices.
Science: In Science, we are beginning to work to understand the basic properties of electricity and how it flows. Ask your student how to light a bulb with wires and a battery! I bet they would love to challenge you to do the same. :) They have discovered that they may be even smarter than some MIT Grads! (See video link.) As we continue our work on this standard, students will learn more about factors that impact the strength of both electric and magnetic forces and will experiment to find several ways to lessen and strengthen those forces. Students are really enjoying this standard!

Math: In 7th grade math, math we are currently transitioning in to Geometry. Students will be investigating many geometry terms and their relationships and also learning and using many formulas for area and volume. This is usually a nice change of pace for students this time of year.
Social Studies: In Social Studies we are learning about global problems associated with population and migration. We have focused on population so far to understand how birth rate and death rate affect a population. We will be doing an inquiry about population growth in Southeast Asia. Then we will look at migration and why people move from place to place.

Third Grade Math
North Star 3rd graders have been working hard learning their multiplication facts. Each class is or has been working on “Ice Cream Math” - which earns scoops of ice cream and toppings for passing multiplication fluency tests. Two classes have already had their ice cream party - and the other three classes will be celebrating soon.
Students Celebrate Great Behavior with MAGIC
Last week students at West Elementary celebrated their good behavior by enjoying a magic show by ABSOLUTELY JIM (Jim Austin). Students were delighted to see a magically appearing dove and rabbit, an appearance by Super Chicken and Chicken Nugget, and much more. Jim explained how following our PBIS behavior expectations; BE SAFE, BE RESPECTFUL, and BE RESPONSIBLE, makes a difference in our lives and to those around us. Teachers with classrooms who had received class awards were revealed with a handkerchief trick. Students were fully entertained and learned important lessons about behavior!
Important Information for Kindergarten Parents/Guardians
Dear Kindergarten Parents & Guardians,
*Kindergarten Roundup--May 2 (Current kindergarten students staying home for the day)
*Step Up Day--May 28 (Current kindergarten students step up to 1st grade for a portion of the day)
On May 2, we will be having Kindergarten Roundup for next year’s kindergarten class. In the past few years, Kindergarten Roundup and Step Up Day have been combined into one day. Our goal this year is to make sure our incoming kindergarten students have enough time to start to build a rapport and relationship with their kindergarten teacher, get a feel for the building, and experience what school feels like as a kindergartener. When these two events are combined, our incoming kindergarten students and teachers do not have enough time to accomplish our goals. Since we are separating the two events this year, our current kindergarten students will stay home on May 2. Below you will find some activities that your kindergarten student can do at home: Outdoor Scavenger Hunt and Science Activities involving Peeps. We realize it isn’t ideal for our current kindergarten students to have a day away from school. However, we feel this is necessary to get our future kindergarten students off to a great start.
- Kinderprep students will attend Kindergarten Roundup on May 2.
- On May 28, we will be having Step Up Day for current Kindergarten through 5th grade. Your kindergarten student will participate and will step up to 1st grade for a portion of their day.
Please reach out to me if you have any questions or concerns.
