Ms. Arnold's Weekly News
Week of 10-13-14
Classroom Learning Time
Our Focus Points
Reading / Language Arts
Students are continuing to work through our Daily 5 rotations, Read to Self, Read to Someone, Partner Fluency Time, Listening Time, and Teacher Time. Students are setting goals to pick best-fit books within a variety of genres. I do not expect students to read AR books nor meet any specific AR requirements through the year. Rather I expect them to read, a goal of 40 books this year, across all genres. Reading skills and strategies we are targeting will focus on one our CAFE (Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, Expand Vocabulary) areas. In comprehension we are working on identifying the main idea and supporting details. As well as using I-PICK strategies to pick "Just Fit" books.
Math (Topic 2/Unit 2)
This week we began Unit 2 that focuses on Addition/Subtraction concepts. We studied these addition properties: Associative, Communtitive, and the Identity Property. Another focus point was using addition to help us subtract. Finding the difference between two numbers.
Writing
Students are continuing to gather stories in their writer's notebooks. We have begun identifying and creating complete sentences using all 5 parts (subject, verb, complete sense, capital letter and end mark) as well as developing an understanding for subjects and predicates.
Science
We are continuing our first unit "Forces and Motion". Students are exploring with different types of forces and how they impact motion of things/objects. They will also learn about Sir Isaac Newton and his three laws of motion.
Social Studies
We will begin our first topic of study: Map skills.

1. The Rotary Club and the PTO will be having its 8th annual Halloween Party on Sunday, October 26th. It will be from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. All children thru 6th grade are encouraged to put on their costumes and join us for an afternoon of games, contests, food and fun. It is FREE, so please join us at the Fifth Street Township Fire Station for some Halloween fun.
2. MICHIGAN CENTER EDUCATION FOUNDATION will be having their 3rd annual Craft Show in the Michigan Center Jr. High School Gymnasium on Saturday, November 1st starting at 10:00 am and will close at 4pm. Admission is a non-perishable food item for the Food Pantry or a donation. We invite you to join us and are honored to provide you with a place to show off your homemade crafts. One 8ft. table is included in the $25.00 registration fee. Additional tables for your space may be rented for $20.00 each. There will be a concession stand operated by our Cardinal Club. Should you have any questions, please call Mrs. Rockwell at 517-789-8831 or cjrock5040@comcast.net
3. We have had a few cases of head lice at school already this year. This is not uncommon when students work and play together. It is important to emphasize to your child that they should not share any hair products (combs, ponytail holders, etc.), hats or scarves. If your child is sent home with head lice, their hair needs to be treated. You will also need to treat your home environment. This is a time consuming task but it is necessary. When you have removed all the nits you can find, please BRING your child to the school office to have their head checked one more time. If the child is clear, he/she can return to class. This usually can be taken care of in one day. Thanks for working with us on this. If you would like any information about how to treat this, please let us know. We have some information and our school nurse may be a helpful resource for you too.
4. GOOD NEWS CLUB will be held on Monday, October 13th from 3:30 – 4:30 p.m. There will be games, songs and refreshments. Forms went home this week. A permission slip is needed to attend.
5. KEICHER ELEMENTARY 4TH GRADE MACKINAC RAFFLE ticket sale is still going on. Tickets are $1.00 each. When you are done selling or if you require additional tickets, simply return your completed tickets and money, along with any unsold tickets to your students’ teacher. The fundraiser continues until October 24th

6. BOOK FAIR VOLUNTEERS - We would like to take this opportunity to thank our volunteers for the Book Fair. We certainly couldn’t do it without your help. Profits ($1689.00) from the book fair went to buy books for your student’s classroom and the library.
7. POP CAN TABS FOR CHARITY – Brandon Burton is collecting pop can tabs for Ronald McDonald House Charities, in Northwest Ohio, to donate while on a planned trip to volunteer. RMHC provides lodging, food and transportation at little or no cost to families whose children are getting medical care at nearby hospitals. The stays at the house are supported by donations, such as pop can tabs. Brandon’s family stayed at the RMHC from November 19, 2002 – February 14, 2003 at no cost while he was at Children’s Hospital following his birth. Tabs may be dropped off at the Keicher office. Your help is greatly appreciated.
8. Calling all singers in fourth, fifth, and sixth grades! Mrs. Micheel-Mays is hosting an Elementary Choral Festival at Michigan Center High School on Saturday, November 8th. Singers from across South Central Michigan will rehearse and perform high quality choral literature under the direction of master clinicians. The event will begin at 8:15 AM and conclude at 12:00 PM with a choral performance for family and friends in the Michigan Center Auditorium. All students in fourth, fifth, and sixth grades are welcome to attend. Let's show our Michigan Center pride by filling the choir with Keicher Cardinals! Please visit http://www.micheel-mays.weebly.com or the link below for additional information, and return the permission slip to Mrs. Micheel-Mays by Friday, October 10th.
