Welcome / Bienvenidos

Freedom Families,

As we come to the end of a short week, we would like to take the time to thank the Freedom staff for working on our School Improvement Plan this past institute day. The staff looked over the school goals and began to develop a plan on how to accomplish those goals. Our Freedom Family Rocks!

A reminder that the last day of Quarter 1 is this Friday, October 22nd. We will be sending home progress reports the week of October 25. Please remind you students to speak with their teachers and make sure to turn in any missing assignments.

This Tuesday, October 19th, we will be following the Extended Excel schedule. We will utilize this schedule every Tuesday that we do not have late start, so that teachers can have meaningful social emotional lessons with our students. The lessons will be from the Second Step curriculum. If you have any questions please reach out to the Freedom office.

We hope you have a GREAT week!

Stars of the Week/Estrellas de la Semana

6th Grade

Nicholas Martinez

Nicholas is a leader in his mathematics class as he regularly participates in group discussions. He completes his work promptly and accurately, but he is always willing to help other students that need assistance. Nicholas is also a member of the Freedom Cross Country Team and he continues to be a role model for all students at Freedom Middle School. Congratulations Nicholas!

7Th Grade

Gabriella Martinez

A bright smile and caring heart is consistently found with Gabby. She always lends a helping hand to other classmates, and always asks questions when she thinks other students can benefit from the answers in math class. This conscientious student tries to include everyone in activities. She never wants anyone to feel left out. What is super special about Gabby, is that she is alright with not being right all the time. She enjoys learning from her mistakes and just pushes through with a positive attitude. Thank you Gabby for being an awesome role model Every. Single. Day. for other Patriots.

8Th Grade

Xavier Fajardo

Xavier is an outstanding student in class, he is academically excelling in class and is always looking to improve his learning each and every day. He also takes initiative in class and helps in class with task such as passing out papers and helping to clean the white boards after class while making sure the classroom is clean. Keep up the amazing work Xavier, looking forward to the rest of the year.

Whats Happening/ Qué esta pasando

8th Grade ELA

Students finished writing their narrative endings to the short story, “The Elevator.” This particular story ends with a cliffhanger which gives the students a chance to use their imagination about what happens next. The goal of this unit was to review elements of plot, mood, summarizing, theme, and inferencing, and learn revision strategies to make their writing even better.

We have started reading The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton. We have been working on the skills of vocabulary, inferencing, analyzing, finding themes, and identifying important text evidence. We will continue to read The Outsiders into November and eventually write a literary analysis essay that focuses on the important themes from the book.

6th Grade Music

Every day in sixth-grade music, we start with something called the “class playlist.” As a class, we listen to three songs of different genres picked out of a box the students put suggestions in. The students will then vote on their favorite song, and once they do, it is placed on a playlist for them to listen to while doing work in class and for the end of the quarter. Starting with the class playlist allows us to create a welcoming environment of different cultures through music. Sixth-grade music has been focusing on how to read music notes as well as count rhythms. These skills go hand and hand with math and reading; in music, we use math based on the division of time into fractions, and we use reading because music requires a subset of skills; these same skills help maintain literacy. Students are also learning new ways to sing different notes with a system called Solfege which allows the students to learn music at a faster pace. We are finishing off this quarter with learning about instrument families and which instruments fall in which families.

Freedom Drop Off and Pick Up/ Entrega y recogida de Freedom

Freedom Families,

For parents dropping off and picking up students; the bus lane and parking lot will be closed to vehicles during drop-off and pick-up. These areas will be blocked off and only busses will be allowed access to the bus lane.

If you are coming from south of the Burlington-Northern Railroad Tracks, we ask that you cross the tracks at East Avenue and proceed to 31st Street. Travel east on 31st Street to drop off students on 31st Street at Ridgeland, south of the viaduct. If you are coming from the north, please turn right/west onto 31st street and again, drop off the students on 31st street south of the viaduct.

We also ask that you do not park on the east side of Ridgeland, across from the school. It is unsafe for students to cross across Ridgeland in the middle of the block and they should only cross at the corner.

Thank you for your help in keeping our students as safe as possible during pick-up and drop-off times.
