Newsletter 9 - 3 April 2019
Message from the Principal
Greetings to all WCPS families and community members. I am pleased to walk with you over these next two weeks in the absence of your Principal, Tamara McGougan. Thank you to all who have offered me a friendly acknowledgement and word of welcome. Already after just a very short time, I have a strong sense of the goodness and closeness of this remarkable community. If I can be of any support or assistance, please do not hesitate to make contact.
Ms Lina Bertolini
Acting Principal
Autism Awareness Week
This week, we have been raising awareness and an understanding of what it means to have autism. In the classrooms, teachers have been providing students with the knowledge required to help them to understand autism and how they can be supportive and inclusive with all students.
We thank Mrs Kylie Beveridge, founder of Paint Me A Rainbow, a non profit organisation, for coordinating this week’s activities. Merchandise will continue to be sold at the front of the school each morning, rainbow cupcakes will be sold at the canteen on Friday and children are asked to bring a gold coin donation on Friday to wear rainbow coloured clothes. Year 1 Gold will present a special assembly, ‘The Rainbow People’ on Friday when prizes for the colouring competition will be awarded and the winner of the ‘lolly jar guessing’ will be announced. Money raised will be used to purchase further resources for our multi sensory ‘Rainbow Room’ which is a quiet and calming space that is available to all students in the school.
Easter Liturgy
On Monday 8 April at 11.30am, the students will journey through the Stations of the Cross in their factions. Parents are welcome to join the Pre Primary to Year 6 students. More information can be found further in this newsletter.
Lantern Parade
On Saturday 6 April our Year 4 students will be joining the community in one of the highlights of the Joondalup Festival - the Twilight Lantern Parade. This is a participative community arts project that showcases the talent, energy and creativity of the local community. With over 1,500 people parading last year to an audience of over 8,000 people, the Twilight Lantern Parade is one of the biggest community arts event in the northern corridor.
In 2019, the Twilight Lantern Parade will be seeing stars as the festival presents - A Space Dream!

Project Compassion Stories Week
Week 5 Salma (Bangladesh)
Salma lives with her husband, Masud, in the rural community of Gazipur, two hours from Bangladesh’s bustling capital.
She was just 18 years old, pregnant and fearful for her life and that of her unborn child, when she featured in Project Compassion 2013.
In Bangladesh, maternal and infant mortality rates are still tragically high. During her first pregnancy, Salma was very sick, she experienced abdominal pain and couldn’t eat. She sought the help of a midwife called Pronoti, trained by Caritas Australia’s Safe Motherhood Program.
Pronoti helped Salma safely through two pregnancies, thanks to her comprehensive training in midwifery, antenatal and postnatal care.
The program has reduced maternal and infant mortality in the area by almost 70 percent. Over 400 women have been trained in midwifery since 2008 – and they have given over 28,000 women antenatal checkups and delivered more than 15,000 babies.
Now 24, Salma smiles as she watches her one-year-old boy and six-year-old daughter play together. She is pleased that they are growing up strong and can focus on their hopes for the future.
Project Compassion Boxes
Thank you for your generosity so far in support of Project Compassion. So far we have raised $339 from our class boxes alone. A special mention to the Year 4 students who have raised $162 and to our Year 3 and 6 students who have raised over $60 each thus far. Please remember to bring your small boxes back to school before the end of term and fill in the details on the box if you would like a receipt. Thank-you for your continued support.
