Volunteer With DMPS
Dear Prospective Volunteer,
The Des Moines Public Schools exist so that graduates possess the knowledge, skills and abilities to be successful at the next stage of their lives. Volunteers play a very important role in helping the district accomplish its mission. I want to thank you for your interest in becoming a volunteer in our district. We have a responsibility for, and a strong commitment to, ensuring the safety of the students we serve. To this end, all volunteers must give their consent to the district allowing for the request of information concerning their criminal history. Please complete all parts of the forms provided on the link to the right. This will enable us to process your application as quickly as possible. The success of our students requires commitment from the entire community. We’re excited for the support that you will provide in our relentless pursuit of our mission!
Sincerely,
Thomas M. Ahart
Superintendent
Des Moines Public Schools

More Volunteer Information from Volunteer Office
The applitrack system will inactivate an application after one year. An automated message goes out to the applicant that this is happening. From a volunteer perspective, this doesn't mean they have to fill out another application. As long as an applicant is in your Hanawalt volunteer folder, they are considered active. It is a shortcoming of the system that I can't separate the volunteer applicants from the rest of those applying for employment. A lot of times volunteers have used this yearly notification to log back in to their application to provide any updates. I will run another background check on all volunteers within a 5 year window.
Right now, we are following our employment policy which is every 5 years for background checks. I will be the one to notify the volunteer when that time comes. This isn't a hard deadline because there are a couple of exceptions. As it is with an employee, it is the volunteer's responsibility to notify us if they have a criminal conviction while serving as a volunteer. This would require another check. We may check on parent volunteers as their children progress from elementary to middle to high school. By filling out the volunteer application, applicants are giving us their consent to run a check. If you feel it is warranted, the school can request that I run a check on anyone in your volunteer folder at anytime.
Thanks for the question,
Eric Whitney
