Remembering Gene Horton

It is with great sadness that the BBPHA shares the passing of Gene Horton. Gene was our historian, a teacher, author, world traveler, speaker, volunteer, and friend. He loved his community and tirelessly gave of himself as he lovingly shared his knowledge of Bayport and Blue Point with all he knew.

Gene was born in Brooklyn NY in 1942. He went on to graduate from Providence College and began sharing his love of history in his teaching career at the East Moriches School from 1964 through his retirement in 1997. Gene authored 6 historical books and was a frequent contributor to the local paper, the Bayport Blue Point Gazette. He was a member of many historical societies, an honorary member of the Blue Point Fire Department and the Local History Room at the Bayport Blue Point Library was named in his honor.

Gene's contributions to the BBPHA are endless. He has chaired events, donated items, was a featured speaker, was a docent at Meadow Croft, put his house on the Autumn House tour and many, many more. His love of history was infectious and his commitment to preserve the history of the towns he loved was admirable.

One of Gene's favorite quotes was: To preserve our past is to enrich our future. Gene has enriched the lives and hearts of many. He was a true gentleman and will be missed.

General Membership meeting - CANCELLED

The first general membership meeting that was to be held on September 8th will be cancelled as it is in conflict with the services for Gene Horton. The presentation on Stow Wengenroth will be rescheduled for our general membership meeting in February.

Upcoming dates:

October 13: Farming through the Ages
November 10: Amazing Women and How They Got the Vote

Historic Moonlit Cruise

Our postponed Historic Moonlit Cruise was supposed to happen on August 28th, but unfortunately Mother Nature had other plans for that evening. It certainly was disappointing for those of us who have toured the Great South Bay before and learned so much about our local nautical history. It was also disappointing for those who have not had the chance to attend. Full refunds should have been granted through PaPal or other means. Please reach out if you have questions or concerns. Fingers crossed that next year the weather will cooperate! Are you listening Mother Nature??!!

Summer Concerts

This summer the BBPHA held 2 FREE concerts at the Bayport Memorial Park. Our communities came out to enjoy an evening of delightful music and a fun family gathering. On August 22nd, we had the Lazy Bunny Ukulele Band. It was a great crowd and a fun night! Special thanks to BBPHA member Dave Harenberg for arranging this FREE concert for our communities!

Odds and ends...

Meadow Croft House Tours: Historic tours of the Roosevelt Estate are happening every weekend from now through October. The times are 2:00-4:00 on Saturday and Sunday. See how life was in the early 1900's as you experience a guided tour with a trained docent. Always something new to see and learn!

Sayville Yacht Club display: A wonderful display of memorabilia from the Sayville Yacht Club is currently on display. Did you know John Ellis Roosevelt was the first commodore? Come on down to MC and check it out!
