ACCESS TESTING
Dear Parent or Guardian,
In the next few weeks, starting January 16, through February 19, 2019, English Language Learner (EL) students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade will participate in the administration of the ACCESS for ELLs® language proficiency test. This assessment is a state requirement that is administered to students until the student reaches English language proficiency. This assessment includes all identified students even those whose parents have refused language support services. All EL students must be tested until they achieve the state prescribed minimum score of an overall composite proficiency level of 4.8 to be considered English language proficient.
The assessment, called ACCESS for ELLs® – Assessing Comprehension and Communication in English from State to State for English Language Learners, provides a standardized measurement of academic language proficiency for ELL students throughout the state of Illinois, and in other states. It measures English language learners' social and academic proficiency in English. It assesses social and instructional English as well as the language associated with language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies within the school context across the four language domains. Additional information on the assessment is attached.
Like any other standardized test, please make sure your child goes to bed early, eats breakfast every morning, gets to school on time and most importantly that he or she is present every day during this testing time frame.
If you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s classroom teacher or me, Beatriz Maldonado at 708-795-2300.
Sincerely,
Beatriz Maldonado
Director of Language Acquisition

Estimado padre, madre o tutor,
Atentamente,
Beatriz Maldonado

Quick Note from Ms. Bazz/Nota rápida de la Sra. Bazz
As we all know the weather has been getting colder and colder and the snow has hit us. Please make sure that your students are coming to school dressed for the weather. The children will continue to line up outside in the morning and will also continue to go outside for recess unless the weather is deemed unsafe. Sweatshirts are NOT enough to handle the Chicago weather so please make sure students are bundled up before coming to school. If your students need a jacket, hat, gloves or a scarf, please reach out to either Ms. Nilles our Social Worker (ext. 4632) or Mrs. Simpson out Assistant Principal (ext. 4641) and they can get you what you need.
Also, with the weather getting rougher, please make sure that you are giving yourself enough time in the morning to get your students to school by 8:25. There has been an over abundance of tardies in the last month and we need to be more on top of it. That said, unless there is a dr. appointment, students should be in school until 3:00 everyday. Leaving early is just as impactful on a students academic success as coming in late. Please let us know, if you or your family need support getting this done. Being partners in your children's education is our top priority.
Thank you~
Ms. Bazz

Hola Pershing Familias~
Gracias ~
MS. Bazz

Notes From the Nurse / Notas de la Enfermera
Dear Parents/Guardians:
Cold/Flu Season is here! Children who come to school with symptoms of illness are not in the best frame of mind for learning! Please do not send your child to school if any of the following symptoms are present:
- Constant coughing
- “runny” nose especially with excessive mucus of any color
- Temperature of 100.0 or higher
- Diarrhea or vomiting
- Rashes or any scratching for unknown reasons, with or without fever
- Red, watery itchy eyes that were crusted upon awakening
Continue to keep your child home after an elevated temperature until he/she has a normal temperature for 24hrs without the use of anti-fever medicine (ex. Tylenol, Motrin, Advil). Please call the school each day your child is sick to report their absence.
Thank you for your cooperation in this important matter. Together we can keep all of the Pershing staff and students healthy and ready to participate in school feeling their very best!! If you have any questions feel free to call me at any time (708)- 795- 2349.
Sincerely,
Danielle Humes RN

Estimados padres/guardianes:

* temperatura de 100,0 o más
* diarrea o vómitos
* erupciones o cualquier rasguño por razones desconocidas, con o sin fiebre
* enrojecimiento, picazón en los ojos llorosos que se encostraron en Despertar
