JHW Inspire Academy - Rockdale
5th Six Weeks
Real World Training
Staff Highlight
Science - Dr. Forsyth
Over this six-weeks in science, we studied various components of the universe such as stars, galaxies, and black holes. Students then illustrated and described their own galaxies (see pictures). We also studied the structure of plants and how animals’ organ systems work together to support life. We then extended the study of plants and animals to explore how energy is transferred within an ecosystem and how organisms depend on one another for survival. Students are finishing up the ecosystem unit by preparing for an “episode of Survivor” by learning about a biome and making a survival plan to survive in the wilderness alone within that biome. Students are deciding what supplies they need, what they will eat and drink, and how they will provide shelter for themselves. Watch for next six-week’s newsletter to see those results!
Math - Mr. Pantaleon
This six weeks math students investigated solving systems of equations by solving for “y”. They also mastered how to solve these equations using the graphing calculator. 5th-8th and Algebra students are reviewing for the STAAR test which will take place in May. Students are developing strategies and methods that are essential for STAAR success.
Using prior years' released STAAR tests, we are practicing the process of elimination , reasoning, graphing calculator and basic algebra concepts to reinforce students' skills needed for the test. Student are continuing to utilize Edgenuity MyPath Math to reteach and reinforce skills that may have been missed in the past. As always we are having fun and learning at the same time!
ELA - Ms. Vance & Ms. Aguilar
Students read the story "Before Hip Hop was Hip Hop" by Rebecca Walker and created a book cover. Inside they used their skills to write a summary of the story.
JHW Inspire Library
We also encouraged students to find and use their local public libraries when they return home.
