Staff Spotlight
Lindsay Ray
1. What classes do you teach and/or programs and activities do you work with?
I teach AGS 1 and AGS 2 this year and I'm also the staff advisor for the Sexuality and Gender Alliance or SAGA (formerly the Queer Straight Alliance).
2. How long have you been at WHS?
This is my sixth year at Westview.
3. What do you enjoy most about the Westview community?
I SO enjoy the people that I get to work with every day (both my colleagues and my students). When I walk through the school in the morning on the way to the copier or to my classroom (or even as I'm sitting in my room at the end of the day) I am greeted by folks who will ask how I'm doing, tell me a good joke, ask thoughtful a question, or just give me a high five. I'm definitely an extrovert, so I am energized by all the rad people who make WHS great.
4. If you could have a gigantic billboard anywhere with anything on it - metaphorically speaking, getting a message out to millions or billions - what would it say and why?
It could be a few words or a paragraph. It could be someone else's quote or any quotes you think of often or live your life by. Why would you put it on a billboard today? I'm going to start with a Gloria Estefan lyric and tack on my mom's best advice to me: "Get on your feet, get up and take some action, and above all, be kind." (I am but a math teacher, so apologies if that's an ill-formed sentence.)
I like to live my life by both of those ideas. I hope to always be active to create a better world for my students, and I think that folks should never just sit around an complain. There's always something to do to effect positive change, from having a meaningful conversation to creating some art to volunteering in your community to running for office. And since we're in a world with 7.5 billion other people, I think it's a good idea to be as kind as we can possibly be to each other. It just makes life a little more joyful.
As a back up, "Measure twice, cut once" is also pretty great billboard material.
