From the Desk of Mr. Hottovy...
Welcome back Wildcats!
We are excited to start another great year at Westbrook. This year, our theme is “The Power of Yet!” We will be focused on helping each student and staff member create a “growth” mindset. Having a growth mindset means understanding that you can get better at anything with practice and perseverance. Our skills in things like Math, Reading, Music, and Art are not predetermined. Skills in those and all subject areas are things that we can improve. One way to acknowledge this is to use the word “yet”. Instead of saying “I can’t read very well”, we want to teach kids to say “I can’t read very well… yet”. I instead of “I’m not very good at math”, we want to hear “I’m not very good at math... yet”. One tiny word can completely change the meaning of these negative thoughts.
If you would like some information about how you can help your child foster a growth mindset, I recommend this Blog. If you would like to see how we are harnessing “The Power of Yet” on a daily basis, make sure that you like our page on Facebook and that you follow us at @Westbrook66 on twitter.
We would also like to encourage parents and families to attend our opening assembly on the first day of school, August 14 at 10:00am. At this assembly, we will introduce our staff, hear from a guest speaker, and invite everyone to use “The Power of Yet” to make this our best year…yet. It is going to be a great year at Westbrook. We are looking forward to welcoming all students back to school and continuing to develop strong partnerships with our families. Please do not hesitate to reach out to us for any reason.

Parking in the upcoming year.
Parking Lot Ponders…
As you may have noticed, we have lots of changes happening at Westbrook regarding our parking and traffic flow. Please pay close attention to communication about pick up and drop off as we get closer to the start of the year. We are still in the process of figuring out how the new construction will impact how we get students safely in and out of the building. Until we send out finalized instructions, please know that there are a few important things that we want everyone to know:
Please DO NOT leave your car unattended in any drive up lane. This impedes the traffic flow for everyone. If you are coming into the building, or walking your children up to the door, pull into a designated visitor spot (coming soon off of Robertson).
Only drop your children off on the curb of a drive up lane. DO NOT drop your children off on the curb of the street. This includes dropping children off on the street directly east of the front doors.
When we do send out finalized traffic flow and drop off/pick up directions, please make sure that you share them with the people that pick your children up. We have many daycares, neighbors, aunts, uncles, grandparents, and older siblings that pick up after school. Please make sure that they understand the parking directions as well.
Thank you in advance for taking responsibility in making sure that all students are safe during drop off and pick up. If you have any suggestions about how to improve our traffic flow, please email Mr. Hottovy at hottovy.tyler@westside66.net.

Health Office Hot Spot...
Some students will need to take medication while at school. You will need to have a form signed by the doctor and on file at the school in order for us to disperse these medications. If you are in need of a form please contact the main office and they would be happy to provide one for you. I will be returning to school on Tuesday August 13th if you would like to drop off meds and forms. Also if your child has an inhaler at home make sure they have one here at school. They will need to have an asthma action plan on file and doctors know what this is. It MUST be housed in the health office so the student can be monitored and no other student finds it in the hallway. Last year we had several inhalers found in various parts of the school.
If you have any questions please call Laurie Beatty, Health Assistant at 402-390-6490.
Mentor A Wildcat...
Consider being a TeamMates Mentor
The positive impact of TeamMates Mentoring on a student/mentees’ levels of hope, engagement in school, and well-beinghas been well researched.
In a recent school year,
§ 75% of TeamMates mentees had fewer unexcused absences
§ 84% of TeamMates mentees experienced fewer disciplinary referrals
§ 55% of TeamMates mentees improved their academic performance
Please consider making a 1-hour a week commitment (meeting at school, only during school calendar) to make an incredible difference in a child’s life. TeamMates prefers mentors to be able to commit to the program for at least 3 years to make a lasting impression. If you are interested in learning more about TeamMates Mentoring, contact Mrs. Lowe (402-408-8519). The comments below from mentees reveal how mentoring touches a child’s life:
"Thank you so much for coming and seeing me each week. I'm so happy that you're my mentor. I love spending time with you. I will do anything to make you proud. I won't ever let you down.” - TeamMate Mentee
“"Thank you for being a teammate of mine. I enjoy spending my time every week to talk about how I am. You're like a pal to me.” - TeamMate Mentee
