LSES Weekly Update

Exceptional things happen here!

Week of May 9-13

A peek into the 3rd grade...

The 3rd grade is having fun with science! Our students exercised their engineering skills when they tried to create their own structure that would protect an egg when it was dropped. Each student had access to recycled household materials like bubble wrap, sections of an egg carton, tissues, and plastic bags. They made their egg as secure as they could. Next, they went outside. Ms. Barcenas climbed a ladder and one by one she dropped everyone’s egg. Students observed and evaluated the results. Mrs. Crnichs’ students learned about chemical reactions by mixing a liquid (vinegar) with a powder (baking soda) in a recycled soda bottle to cause a reaction that produced a gas and blew up the balloon! Another experiment involved studying different substances that each contained a different amount of fat and how it affected food dye when we added drops of dish soap. We found that cream, with the most fat content at 3.5%, had the greatest effect on the food dye when dish soap was added.

Mrs. Godfrey’s class has been studying animal habitats. Students did a research project on an animal of their choice and created a digital story on tablets in Adobe Voice. Students will present their projects to the whole class starting next week. All 3rd graders have been working with our Right Brain Initiave clay artist to make clay animals. These animals still need to be glazed and fired. Students will bring their creations home at the end of the year.

We have also been studying biographies about important or significant people, and students are now giving short speeches to report about the important person they chose to study.

Garden Festival

On Saturday, April 23, we had our 8th annual Garden Festival. About 40 people came to help clean up our school grounds. The rain stayed away for the most part (it did sprinkle a bit) while volunteers helped pull weeds, plant flowers, and pick up trash. We all enjoyed getting to know each other a little better. After all the hard work was done, a few LSES dads cooked a great lunch on the barbecue. A special thanks to Sue Peterson (who works in the cafeteria) for donating the flowers that we planted. They will make our school beautiful for years to come.

Latino Cultural Festival

Thousands descended on downtown Hillsboro for the 13th annual Latino Cultural Festival. The event kicked off with a parade around part of the downtown area. Students, parents and staff from many HSD schools walked in the parade. Afterwards, we all had front row seats to watch the Aztec dancers. For about 30 minutes we were entranced with the beautiful costumes and dancing. HSD Mariachi Una Voz gave a great concert for a huge crowd playing many favorites. Featuring Latino art, food, entertainment and so much more, the Latino Cultural Festival is something to look forward to every year.

Paw Pantry

We know that growing kids are hungry all the time. If you are having trouble keeping your pantry full, we have food for you! The Paw Pantry will be open every Tuesday from 1:45PM-2:30PM starting May 3 so that LSES families can pick up a bag of food. If you can’t make it to the school during those times, a bag of food can be sent home with your child. Flyers are being sent home this week. Please fill out and return the form on the flyer if you will need a bag sent home. We hope to see you Tuesday!

Lost Clothing

At last count, there was 196 lost clothing items in the lost and found. If your child is missing something, come check it out! The lost and found area is located outside the office.
