Lafayette Update
April 22nd
Family Life Update
After listening to parent and student feedback, and discussing the feedback as a staff, we will be implementing the following change to how our Family Life lessons will be delivered to students. We will pair our switch classes together for the lessons and we will separate the students by gender. All students will receive the same content and the same lessons. If your child does not have a switch class, they will also be separated by gender. This separation will also help with the transition of students who have opted out of these lessons. In order to implement this change, we must make some minor logistical adjustments to our scheduling, so we will push back this unit of study until some time in May. I will be in touch to communicate the exact date soon. Thank you for your understanding. You may reach out to me should you have any questions.
Texting at School
More than half of the students asking to be picked up did not need to go home. Our school nurses could have managed and monitored the symptoms or student behaviors to determine the best course of action. This is why they are here. We do not want sick children in school. We also do not want students avoiding school due to a social issue or an academic issue. I worry that if we continue to allow our students to be in charge of when they can stay or not stay at school; we will do just that.
Our policy is that students' devices should be turned off and put away when they are on school property because any device is a distraction. When students are texting during the day and their focus is on their phones/watches, it will impact their academic progress. It is also our expectation that everyone follows the policies that are in the student handbook. When some students follow the rules and others do not, it is simply not fair.
I know that kids will always push the boundaries and my note to you might be in vain, so I have one ask. When your child reaches out to go home via text or phone, please have them go to the nurse. You can follow up with a call to the nurse to determine the best course of action for your child. As I said before, we do not want sick kids here and if they are sick we will send them home. However, we do not want a student trying to go home to avoid school either. This does happen and could have a detrimental effect on how they view school throughout their years in school.
