News for the Week of May 6, 2011
Language Arts
This week the children learned about whales and the names of the whale’s body parts. Since our Language Arts theme is called “Spring is Here”, the children will be planting seeds, painting, and making spring pictures. Next week we will also continue doing writing projects for the featured letter Ww, and begin letter Yy activities. Our high school helper Kristy did a sunflower activity with the children. We now have sunflowers springing up around the room.

Math
The children have been working hard to learn their math facts to 10. They have been taking timed math addition and subtraction tests. Addition problems are much easier for the children than subtraction. To help them better understand skip counting by 2’s and 5’s, we used a number line to find the missing numbers and identify the number pattern. Next week we will continue patterns and work on comparing and ordering by size, length, and using different measuring units.
Writing
We have continued researching and taking notes on facts about parrots. The children will need to use their notes to write their book on parrots. We found out that parrots, parakeets, and macaws are belong to the hookbill family of birds.
Handwriting
Over the past two weeks we have spent a great deal of time on lower case letters. Their writing is more legible, but some are still struggling with their pencil grip. Please encourage your child to write within the writing lines and be sure to leave spaces between words. Many are still forgetting to start each sentence with a capital letter and end with a period.
