Inspirational Talks
I've spoken to many of you about books I've been reading and the podcasts and TedTalks I've been listening to as I drive into work, and it has made an incredible difference in my daily outlook. Immersing myself in reflective and inspirational thinking about healthy organizations and quality leadership provides me with regular fuel to continue transforming myself, my work, and my team. In addition, it simply improves my mindset for the day.
This particular TedTalk, titled Forget the Pecking Order at Work, focuses on building healthy cultures. "Organizations are often run according to 'the superchicken model,' where the value is placed on star employees who outperform others. And yet, this isn't what drives the most high-achieving teams. Business leader Margaret Heffernan observes that it is social cohesion — built every coffee break, every time one team member asks another for help — that leads over time to great results. It's a radical rethink of what drives us to do our best work, and what it means to be a leader. Because as Heffernan points out: 'Companies don't have ideas. Only people do.'"

two teams for high schools)
Summer Relocation
The Communications Department has been receiving questions about relocation plans to alternative sites for summer work days due to campus renovations. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you prepare your buildings for summer break:
Contact Keith Chapman to ensure the current number is routed to the temporary location on the right dates.
Start letting families know about new location via newsletters, tweets, website, at meetings, etc.
Post a sign on the front door (or other location if front door is part of renovation, such as marquee).
Here is sample wording for website and sign:
Our office is relocating temporarily for the summer while the campus undergoes renovations for ________ (brief description). We will be at _______ (name of school and address) from _______ (start date) to _________ (end date). You can still reach us via phone at the same number _______(include number).

Restoring Students tot the Classroom after a Discipline Incident
When student behavior warrants an office referral, we typically aim to return students to the classroom as soon as reasonably possible. We know that time spent in the office is lost instructional time. But sometimes that return to the classroom happens too quickly in the minds of our teachers. Because communication with the teachers is essential for an effective and positive re-entry, one of our principals is instituting a new procedure next year.
The new plan includes an office staff member going to the classroom prior to re-entry and supervising the class while the teacher comes to office. This provides the administrator an opportunity to discuss the steps taken with student, and it also provides the teacher an opportunity to talk 1:1 with the student and positively transition him/her back to the classroom. The transparency with the teacher about what occurred in the office with the student and the opportunity for the teacher to become part of the re-entry process will lead to a more positive return to the classroom.
