Charger Check-In
August 18, 2020 - Back to School Edition
A Note from Ms. Owens
In just a couple days, teachers will meet their students out in the parking lots and in front of our church. I cannot wait for the sounds of kids greeting one another and to see them back in the school building. We continue to work diligently to ensure a safe and healthy reopening for our children and for our faculty and staff.
With that in mind, we ask you to partner with us in a shared effort to maintain a safe environment for our school community. We have gone through extensive measures to put protocols and procedures in place for our collective health and safety. Maintaining cohorts is at the heart of that plan. We ask for your cooperation in maintaining this model whenever feasible so that our staff and students are able to experience a safe and sustained return to school.
Our 2nd-8th grade students should bring their school/classroom supplies with them on their assigned Orientations Day (this Thursday or Friday). ALL INDIVIDUAL SUPPLIES SHOULD BE OPENED AND LABELED PRIOR TO ARRIVING AT SCHOOL. This does not apply to paper goods, cleaning supplies or other communal items.
The overview of our reopening plan is available at the button below. This link will take you to the plan with the most recent updates.
A Bit More News
- Our first Eat & Earn of the year is tomorrow, Wednesday, August 19 at Raising Cane's on Cicero & 111th from 11AM-3PM. Swing by for some lunch, mention this fundraiser, and SCA will receive 15% of the sale.
- Teachers have made some modifications to student supply lists. We know disinfectant wipes are hard to find and understand if you are not able to send them with your student. The updated lists are available at the button below.
- SCA has been receiving a growing number of phone calls and emails from families asking about transferring their children to St. Catherine. About three weeks ago, we took a pause to evaluate the impact of accepting additional new students, and, at this time, we will not be accepting any more new students to our K-8 classes.
- If you know of an SCA family who owns a small business that we can publicize here to help support them, please reach out to me via email. Scroll down to see local businesses we can support.
Please pray for our nation, for our communities, for our brothers and sisters who are tired and broken, for our brothers and sisters working to keep us safe, and for own sorrows. We are all - each and every one of us - beloved children of God.
Peace,
Kristine Owens
Information for Orientation Days - Thursday and Friday
Here are a few important reminders:
- All students who will be participating in in-person instruction should attend their assigned Orientation Day. Please see the schedule below.
- Parents and other family members will not attend orientation.
- To see the doors your child(ren) will be using for drop-off or pick-up, you can click on the button named "Visuals for Student Entry and Dismissal." You can also find this information on pages 4-5 and 9 of the reopening plan.
- Please note that Grade 3 & 4 as well as Grades 5 & 6 will be exiting from doors that are different than their entry doors.
- Students are welcome to wear their gym uniforms beginning on orientation and lasting at least through October 2.
- At drop-off and pick-up, parents will need to wait in the designated waiting areas marked in and around the parking lots. Due to the requirements needed to maintain cohorts, parents will not be able to walk their children to the class lines or to the doors of the school.
- All SCA students are required to wear masks that cover their nose and mouth once they are on school grounds in the morning. We ask that parents also wear masks that cover their nose and mouth if they are drop-off or pick-up.
- Group pictures and other photos will not be able to be taken at drop-off or pick-up. We ask that you take any "Back to School" pictures before you arrive at school.
Preparing Class Supplies
Students in grades 2-8 should bring their school/classroom supplies with them on their assigned Orientation Day. In past years, students have been able to unpack and prep their supplies while they are at school. This year, we will not be able to accommodate that. ALL INDIVIDUAL SUPPLIES SHOULD BE OPENED AND LABELED PRIOR TO ARRIVING AT SCHOOL. This does not apply to paper goods, cleaning supplies or other communal items.
Lunch Supervision
As we have done for so many years, we are again asking for adult assistance in lunch supervision. This year our lunches will look different with new time frames. More detailed information on lunches will be shared in the updated overview. Our lunch shifts this year are as follow:
Lunch Period 1: 10:30 - 11:25
Lunch Period 2: 11:25 - 12:15
Lunch Period 3: 12:15 - 1:10
The time frames indicated include time after students are dismissed. Our maintenance staff will disinfect the full area, including tables and chairs, between lunch periods, but we have built in time after students dismiss for lunch supervisors to wipe down tables for spills, crumbs, etc.
Your tuition will be credited $10.00 for each lunch shift worked ($30.00 per day for all 3 shifts).
To minimize the number of people in the building, we are asking for a commitment of at least 3-4 days per week for one trimester, which ends near Thanksgiving break. We also cannot allow families to share the duty this year. The person that signs up will be the only person allowed to work those shifts.
Masks will be required of all lunch supervisors, at all times. Face shields will also be provided but are not required.
Charge On 5K
Time to dust off those running shoes, the Charge On 5K is going virtual! Due to the COVID-19 virus and these unprecedented times, we have decided to pivot and make the Annual Charge On 5K a virtual event. You can run anytime, anywhere, with anyone from August 15-August 22. You may submit your times on the Charge On website and there will be awards for the overall top male and female.
Anyone who registers by August 3 will receive their t-shirt before the race. Anyone who registers after August 3 will receive their shirt in the mail after the conclusion of the race. Registration will remain open until Saturday, August 22.
This was not the 10th annual that we were expecting, so we are going to call this the 9.5 Annual Charge On Virtual 5K, and we will celebrate the 10th Annual in 2021 when we can all be together.
Packet Pick up is TBA.
As we prepare for the fall, here is a great way to get the family together and run/walk in celebration of a new school year, however that may look!
Eat & Earn at Raising Cane's - Wednesday, 8/19 from 11am-3pm
Please mark your calendars for our first Eat & Earn fundraiser tomorrow, Wednesday, August 19 from 11-3PM at Raising Cane's. It's a lunchtime event at the request of Raising Cane's due to Covid-related restrictions. Our fundraising options are looking to be limited, at least to start the year, so please grab lunch next Wednesday if you can. Every dollar helps support all the great things that the FSA does for our kids and our school community. Raising Cane's has also been a very supportive fundraising partner in the past, so let's have a strong Charger showing!
We have upcoming Eat & Earn events scheduled with Chipotle and Nothing Bundt Cakes in September.
