ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS
Conley Hills ES
In an effort to encourage students to continue to be lifelong readers and to develop great reading habits, Conley Hills participated in both “Read the Most Coast to Coast” and “National Read Across America Day”. Both events highlighted and promoted a love for reading. Events included special guest readers and a Dr. Seuss door decoration contest.
Hamilton Holmes
Recently Hamilton E. Holmes Elementary hosted a Title I Parent Workshop. The workshop introduced parents, along with their children, to the new Georgia Milestone Assessment, provided helpful tips to use outside of school with their children, showed the connection between literacy and math, and provided useful websites and apps. This was a hands-on, fun-filled, learning experience for our parents and it was an opportunity for our parents and students to work together. This workshop was facilitated by Janita Ford, Title I Lead Math Specialist for the Central Learning Community, and Tamara Stroman, Math Coach at HE Holmes.
High Point
MARKET DAY At High Point Elementary
Third graders at High Point Elementary held their first ever MARKET DAY!! Students were asked to make everything they sold and find different ways to market their products. At the end of the day, the grade level made $1000!!!! As you can tell, the administrative team really racked up on items!!! This money will either go towards 3rd grade's field trips or will be donated to a charity. The grade level will involve the students with how their money will be spent!
This project relates to the IB philosophy where students are learning standards in real-world applications. We are excited that teachers are already embracing the IB philosophy at High Point!!!
Ison Springs
What an exciting time for our Ison Springs students as some of their very own teachers launch the Bedtime Stories program! Once a month, a group of ISES volunteers invite students and their parents from the Harbor Pointe Apartment complex, the home to many of our Hawks, to listen to stories in their pajamas!
Bedtime Stories sessions focus on a theme that is related to students’ experiences in grades kindergarten to grade two. Each session includes a reading of, at least, two books on the same topic and at different levels so that all participants are fully engaged. Additionally, to nurture the love of reading, each session concludes with a “take-home” activity such as a poem, sequencing activity, puppet patterns, or story cubes that families can use at home to retell stories.
Oak Knoll
Woodland
Ms. Elizabeth Royeton and Ms. Brittany Swales from the Chattahoochee Nature Center recently visited third graders at Woodland Elementary students. The program was provided by the Fulton County Teaching Museum.
The students observed an opossum, an owl, and a snake while learning about their behaviors in their native Georgia habitats. As the students exited, they were given the opportunity to touch an owl’s talon, an owl’s wing, and a snake’s skin. The hands on experience heightened the learning experience for the students.

March Math Madness at Woodland MS
In the Fulton Co. math competition, the 6th grade math team came in 3rd in ciphering. The Woodland 7th grade math team was 3rd overall! Woodland then turned the former snow day into a math celebration with all 8th grade students competiting in Pi Day events including best t-shirt design and most digits memorized. But Friday the 13th is also Digital Learning Day so some classes were working on iPads to create math models. Teachers actually kicked off Digital Learning Day by learning how to create self-grading quizzes online and having mini-pecan pies. Math Milestones Bootcamp is Tuesday, March 17th for parents to get the best resources for helping children prepare for the Ga. Milestones.
Ridgeview
Ridgeview Charter School, an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme, was proud to introduce Samantha Olivares to the entire Sandy Springs Community at SSEF’s March 5th STEM event. Samantha is an RCS 7th grade student who decided to join the after-school coding club at Ridgeview in October. She had no idea how her interest in education would be impacted by this one club. Now, after only 4 short months, she has increased her reading, math, and science scores! Her excitement about school and computer coding is contagious, and she is already planning a career in computer technology! Ridgeview was proud to have Samantha address all of the VIP guests at this SSEF (Sandy Springs Education Force) STEM event at North Springs High School, and exhibit her talents and skills with 15 other Ridgeview students.
