PHS Staff Update

January 20th, 2015

Welcome Back from a Three Day Weekend!

Hoping the three days were excellent! Just a few notes below to think about. I am at a WASC pre-visit Tuesday but will be checking email. Have a fabulous week, everyone!

(Near the bottom of this update is a little audio clip from This American Life (thank you, Debi, for passing this on). If you can, take a listen to the clip (about 6 min long) which focuses on expectations. It's pretty cool! (Click on the link, then on Launch Player to start the audio). We'll talk about this at an upcoming staff meeting.

Cheerleaders Dominate at Regionals, Shine at Awards Night

Our varsity cheer team dominated at the regional team event in Sacramento last week. Both the Varsity Stunt Team and the Varsity Show Cheer finished first in a tough field. They now set their sights on nationals later in the year. Go Cheer!

Cheer also had their awards evening Sunday night. All the girls turned out in their formal wear to celebrate superb accomplishments and hard work. Thanks to all the parents who decorated the multi and to Christina Davis for leading the program. AD Kathryn Teeter was there setting up at 4:30 and breaking it all down at 8:30. Thanks to all who make out programs a success!

8th Grade Family Night - PHS Tours and Information (CLHS - Denny!)

We will be presenting our 8th Grade Family Night and School Tour this Thursday, January 22nd. The evening will begin at 6PM with a very short presentation in the Multi, followed by school tours led by ASB students and staff. Debi is organizing and has developed a nice tour schedule shared at PAC. She will remind us of the specifics this week as we gear up for Thursday.

Thursday afternoon is also the recognition for our Teacher of the Year, Denny Plyler, up in Healdsburg. Some of you may be heading up there to represent. I asked that Denny would be up first so that those of us who must return for 8th Grade NIght can make it back. The event starts at 4PM at Villa Chanticleer. See David or Krista for more info!

LumaCon is Wildly Successful

Thanks to the imagination of a team of librarians - Petaluma High's Connie Williams, Casa Grande's Nathan Libecap, and Petaluma Public Library's Kate Keaton - Petaluma's first annual comic convention was a huge hit. An estimated 2000 people attended LumaCon at Herzog Hall last Saturday, experiencing the joy of comic creations as well as a variety of exhibitors including Brian’s Comics, Copperfield’s Books, the Charles M. Schulz Museum, Outer Planets Comics and Games, and Rancho Obi-Wan.

The success of the event reminds us how critical our libraries and the librarians who run them are to our school and broader community. They can see the joy of reading and tools of research from an unique perspective. The city of Petaluma and PHS are blessed to have such excellence in our midst! LumaCon is sure to continue and grow even further next year. Thanks, Connie, for being a visionary and having the energy to create these kinds of events!

Online Registration Continues

Our counseling staff has been busy visiting classes and informing students about class options for next fall. Last week, the current juniors were the first to use the online system to register. There were some bumps but all in all, things seemed to work very well. This week, current sophomores will be registering online during class; next week, it will be the turn of the freshmen.

Wild applause for our counselors and counseling staff for stepping into the unknown of online registration! So far, so good!
