Language Workshop
Language Workshop is a time during the day where we dig deeply into books. We work on one book each week, really thinking about it's different components including character development, problem and solution, and plot. We talk about what the books have in common, and how they may be different from one another.
After Reading our different stories we have been practicing retelling by stating a beginning, middle, and end. We discussed the characters' feelings, and how usually they change throughout the course of the story. We will be wrapping up our first unit next week, and then beginning a unit all about Relationships.
Reading Workshop
Kindergarteners have also been working on phonics skills such as rhyming, figuring out the beginning sounds of words, and letter identification. We have even learned a few of our sight words including the words "the", "to", "see" and "be". It is important for Kindergarteners to master all 40 Kindergarten Sight Words so that they have a strong foundations as they get into difficult texts. We will continue learning Sight Words as the year progresses. Below you will find a list of all of the words we will be learning, and some extra words that will come up in their reading. It never hurts to practice at home! :)
Math Workshop
One of the Kindergarten expectations is that students are able to count to 100 by the end of the school year. We will be practicing this skill all year long. We also have been studying 5 frames and 10 frames, and practicing seeing numbers quickly. This is call "subitizing". The remainder of October will be spent learning about shapes, as well as positional words.
Below are a few links to some of our favorite subitizing and counting sounds for you to listen to at home!
Science
- Be Safe
- Be Respectful
- Be Respsonsible
- Be Safe
We also learned all about community helpers! We talked about how community helpers work hard to keep our community safe. We also brainstormed how we can be positive members of the community.
In order to be positive members of our different communities, we need to do our best to make sure our planet is happy! We can do things like turn off the lights, plant a garden, turn off faucets while brushing our teeth, and use less water when taking a bath! We were lucky to have workers from Waukesha county come in and teach us all about recycling. We got to practice recycling, see what landfills really look like, explore what materials make things that we use everyday, and really get a sense of what we can do to help make the world a great place to live.
