Becoming Life-Long Readers

Read aloud time is enjoyed by families: Kids ages 6–11 and their parents agree that they love(d) or like(d) read aloud time a lot with the top reasons being it is a special time together (72% and 77%, respectively) and reading together is fun (66% and 67%). (Kids & Family Reading Report™ 6th ed.)

As our Book Fair begins, it serves as a reminder to us the benefits of reading. Reading helps increase vocabulary, improve analytical thinking, and enhance writing skills. Also, daily reading improves students' memory and decreases stress levels. Reading is healthy for the mind and the soul.

How can you encourage your child to read? Have your child pick out his/her own book. Ask your child's teacher for book recommendations. Read with your child or ask your child about the story. Model reading at home; whether it's a magazine, a book on the tablet, or an "old-fashion" book, show your child that you read, too!
