Academic & Career Planning Newsletter Volume 5
Volume 5: Healthcare Career Pathway
In the state of Wisconsin, healthcare job growth is expected to mirror the national figures, with one of the largest growth areas expected to be in post-secondary (college) health specialties teachers. (Source: Department of Workforce Development) In other words, with the increased need for practitioners and support workers, we also need people who can teach and train the future healthcare workforce.
The Healthcare industry is much more than doctors and nurses. There are many healthcare careers that require only a two-year associate degree or even a shorter certificate program through a technical college like LTC.
Later this year, we'll devote an entire newsletter to understanding labor market demand, but for now, it's important to remember that if your son or daughter has an interest in Science and has a fondness for helping and caring for others, the Healthcare industry may be the path to pursue.
The Four Legs of the Stool
The second leg is college credit or industry certificate opportunities. South High School offers a series of three Project Lead the Way Science courses; Principles of Biomedical Science, Human Body Systems, and Medical Interventions which all include the possibility of earning college credit.
We also regularly offer courses in our high schools taught by LTC instructors, such as Medical Terminology. Students who enroll in these type of courses can earn college credit or potentially earn industry certifications in areas like Certified Nursing Assistant.
The third leg is career-based learning. As we noted in an earlier edition of this newsletter, career-based learning is an important part of ACP because it allows students a sneak peak, often times in a hands-on setting of what it would be like to be in a particular career. Job shadows, one quarter Co-ops, and Youth Apprenticeships are all highly valuable experiences for students in the healthcare pathway.
The fourth and final leg of the stool is a co-curricular club that complements classroom learning. In the healthcare pathway, we have HOSA (Future Health Professionals). This club affords students the chance to develop leadership and dive deeper into the world of healthcare. Scroll down to view a short video on HOSA.
