Woodside High School has something for everyone. Club Day took place on a warm Friday last week and it was a wonderful event where students could learn about and sign up for any of the 30 different clubs or programs proposed and led by students. Students who connect in at least one extracurricular activity in high school develop a stronger sense of belonging and self confidence than those who don't. If it's not a club, we encourage every Woodside Wildcat to find their place in one of the four "A"s this year! The photos in this week's gallery focus on Activities and Athletics, and if you look closely, you might also find some alumni who returned to speak with and empower current AVID students and you might find some teachers who could pass for students enjoying their popsicles to cool down during this heatwave.

Message from the Principal

Dear Woodside HS Community:


September 11, 2022, marks 21 years since the attacks on the World Trade Centers in New York City, the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia, and a fourth plane that was intentionally crashed in Pennsylvania. Nearly 3,000 people were killed in terrorist attacks on U.S. democracy. Our social media feed this weekend is filled with images and reminders to "Never Forget," and I haven't forgotten. I vividly recall driving from my home in Half Moon Bay over Hwy 92 to 280 South toward Saratoga High School where I taught English, listening to NPR's non-stop radio coverage of what was happening on the east coast. I was in shock. I remember pulling into the parking lot and my fellow teachers struggling to find the words to start our morning classes. How do we greet our students? What could we possibly say to keep them feeling safe? Some had not yet seen or heard the news. This was 2001...before everyone had an iPhone or snapchat. We had to think quickly and make adjustments to our scheduled lessons. We had to create a safe zone for our students as the world as we knew it was quickly changing minute by minute with the news coverage. We had to give them a chance to process. Once we were able to share some facts, we gave students time to ask questions, time to write, time to listen, and more time to process. We had only been in school for about three weeks and I think I was teaching Arthur Miller's play, The Crucible, but this day would connect us in ways beyond the typical student-teacher connection. Our nation was facing its own crucible (severe trial) before the eyes of the world in how we might be defeated or rise above the ashes. That year, my students and I grew up together and we committed to educating one another, to not allow fear of the other, and to fight fearlessly for our freedoms.


I have not forgotten 9/11 and how our nation came together to rebuild physically and emotionally and treasure our freedoms. Sadly, that day was not the first time I realized the term "trauma-informed" teaching was what we were trying our best to do without knowing there was such a term. In 1999, while teaching in Holland, Michigan, the first major school shooting took place at Columbine HS, and when I thought horrible events like this are a rarity, my nearly three decades in teaching have shown me that schools have such an important role in making sure that kids find a place of belonging and a place where they can be seen and heard and celebrated. During our 9/12/22 Staff Development sessions, all teachers will participate in the Community Resiliency Model: Trauma-Informed Practices for all Community Members.


Please join me in making sure every student at Woodside HS is connected to someone at home, at school, and in the community. We will be practicing safety drills in the event of natural disasters and learning how to safely evacuate this week, but we also practice respecting each other's humanity and unique contributions and voices everyday.

Robotics Team 100 Parent Meeting - Saturday, September 17th, 9 - 10AM • Room J-1

After-school robotics, including a competition team—“Team 100”—are part of Woodside High School’s engineering and STEM offerings. Students learn to design and build a robot to compete in a unique tournament game against other teams from around the world. Parents and students are invited to learn about this program on September 17th. Come if your student is a current team member, if your student has attended some of the student meetings this school year or if you or your student are curious and want to find out more about this fun and engaging program. All are welcome and we look forward to seeing you then!

Drama Boosters Club is looking forward to continuing the momentum with another exciting year. We welcome you to join us at our monthly meetings as well as seek out fun ways to help out. Our success is in large part due to our amazing volunteers!

Tutorial During the School Day

Universal Free Meals for all Students & Additional a la carte Offerings

SUHSD is offering Universal Free Meals to students this school year in compliance with the California Department of Education Nutrition Services Division guidelines. This means that your student is entitled to receive a free compliant breakfast and or lunch during the school day free of charge regardless of their ability to pay. Please consider completing a meal application that may qualify your household for other limited income based discounts such as reduced priced internet service.


We are also offering a la carte snacks, beverages and second meals for purchase during the school day. Students must have funds in their cafeteria account to purchase second meals, healthy beverages and or snacks. Parents can create a free myschoolbucks account at WWW.myschoolbucks.com or through the link on the food service payment page. MySchoolbucks is also an App. The free app can be downloaded on iOS and Android. The app will also be used for other payments District wide throughout the year.

OnSite COVID-19 PCR Testing at Woodside Mondays and Thursdays

Please make an appointment with Worksite Labs keeping in mind that although you must input your health insurance information, we are committed to offering our staff and students no-cost COVID-19 PCR Tests. You may receive an Explanation of Benefits (EOB) with the detailed coverage from your health plan. Insurance plans may cover the entire cost, a percentage, or not cover any amount of the testing. The EOB may show a remaining balance or cost due by the insured. Worksite Labs will NOT bill or pursue additional payments to be made by the insured for the remaining amount due.


In 2015, California passed a law that allows all low-income undocumented children and youth under 19 years old to enroll in full-scope Medi-Cal. As of May 16, 2016, all low-income children, regardless of immigration status, are able to enroll in health coverage and get care. Please visit Medi-Cal for Children.
