ORCA SOUNDINGS

October 2021 | Olympic View Elementary School

From the Desk of our Principal

Dear Orca Families,

Wow! It's October and fall is definitely in the air. I appreciate your patience and grace as we navigate the start of the year.

Dress for the weather:

We want students to get fresh air as much as possible. Please help us make going outside enjoyable by sending your child to school in clothes that are appropriate for the weather. Please let us know if you need warm clothes for your child!

PTA:

Our PTA is hard at work and has some amazing upcoming activities. Please be sure to check out their information below.

Students Health and Saftey:

I have had some families reach out to me about the COVID cases that we are seeing at school this year. Keeping students, staff, and families is the most important part of my job and COVID has changed over the last 18 months. We use mitigation strategies at school such as masking, hand washing/sanitizing, and distancing, but we need the help of our larger community as well. If your child is a reluctant masker, please practice wearing a mask at home. Please keep your child home if he/she is sick.

Reach out to us with any questions or if we can provide you with any assistance.

Warm Regards,

Sara Lucero

Character Strong: Empathy

This month we are talking about the social-emotional skill of Empathy. We are using this definition at school:

Empathy: the ability to understand and connect to the feelings of another.

Empathy is a crucial skill for being in a community with others and a powerful skill to develop in personal and professional relationships. We are focusing on a few key pieces of Empathy: knowing how we feel (and having the language to describe those feelings!), understanding what others are feeling, and listening to others well so that we can connect in more meaningful ways! We will reflect on powerful images that will inspire conversations about emotions, connection, and friendship. We will think about incredible people like the Indian author Arundhati Roy and what our past president Barack Obama has to say about Empathy. We will celebrate what makes us different and find the amazing things that bring us together.

Counselor Corner

Hello Ove Families! It's hard to believe our school year is already well underway and we are entering into our second month of school! I just wanted to take a moment to welcome you all back and introduce myself to our new families. I was able to greet all of our students last month while doing an introductory lesson in their classes. During this lesson, they learned a bit about the role of a school counselor and how I can help support them in being excellent learners. We also talked about some of the other support people here at OVE such as our Student Support Specialist/Dean, Mr. Howard, our Behavior Paraeducator, Ms. Michaele Eben, and our School Counseling Intern, Brandy Templet. We are here to help your children do their very best and I am so excited about working with all of our students this school year.

Some of the ways I support students include whole class social and emotional skills lessons, small groups, individual check-ins, and providing school-wide support for programming and services. As a school counselor, my role emphasizes brief, solution-focused counseling that allows students to maximize their learning while minimizing their time out of the classroom. Although I am unable to provide ongoing counseling services such as outside therapists offer, I am able to facilitate the connection between mental health providers and the school team. Please let me know if you have any questions about the school counseling program and thank you for sharing your wonderful children with us at OVE!

Meet Michael Howard, Our New OVE Dean Of Students

By Taylor Berthiaume

My first experience working with Michael Howard was when he joined Olympic View as a paraeducator for a Special Education class that helps students with behavior management. Early on I was impressed by his kindness and ease of working with the students. It doesn’t come as a surprise that a few years later Mr. Howard ended up being an excellent candidate to fill the new role of Dean of Students at OVE.

All Elementary schools in the district have hired for this position at their respective buildings. I interviewed Mr. Howard to help answer some of the questions we think parents might have about him and this new position.

Mr. Howard, what is the purpose and vision for this position at OVE?

The purpose of the Dean position is to add an extra layer of student, staff, and parent support to our school. Our vision is to consistently and effectively provide the Best Service Ever for students, parents, and staff.

How will you as Dean of Students be able to support students?

The Dean of Students - also known as Student Support Specialist - will support students at all levels, including academics, Social-Emotional Learning, and behavior, while ensuring that every student knows that they are loved, safe, and have a sense of belonging to our OVE community.

Can parents contact you to talk about supporting their student, just as they would Mrs. Lucero or Mrs. Hurst?

Yes, they can. The best way to contact me would be via email: mihoward@ohsd.net

My office number is (360) 279-5193 however, office hours will be irregular, as I will be out supporting students most of the time.

What are you most looking forward to as the new Dean of Students at OVE?

Being able to have a significant impact on how students, parents, and staff view OVE. It is of extreme importance, and a personal goal of mine, to ensure that every student at OVE feels loved, safe, and supported by all.

Please share more about your background.

I’m retired Navy. I started off as a Hospital Corpsman, then Physical Therapy Technician, then to Hospital Personnel Management. This is my 12th year in the Education field, and 3rd year at OVE, where I started in the Choices program.

Do you have any hobbies outside of school you’d like to share?

Family, Faith, and riding bikes

Mr. Howard, thank you for letting us know more about you and your new role. We wish you and OVE a wonderful year.

Wetter and Cooler Weather Is On It's Way!

Please remember as October starts that the rain will as well and to have your Orcas dress in layers. The Mornings are often very cool and foggy, showers more often and the temperature does not get as warm as it has been. They spend a good deal of time outside for recess, mask breaks, and fresh air. Some classes even have lessons outside and our Orca friends may need to be either bundled up or wearing sunscreen to school. The weather is often unpredictable in Whidbey.

Importance of this form

For the 2021-22 school year, all the meals for the students will be free again thanks to the USDA. However, we strongly encourage all parents to submit a Free and Reduced Lunch Form. Filling out a meal application may help provide many resources for your student and their school. In addition, eligible families who fill out the form before August 31 may qualify for P-EBT benefits. You may pick up an application at any school or the district office. Electronic forms are available on our website or by accessing the Food Service tab in Skyward Family Access. It's critical our families complete this step. Much of our school's funding is tied around our free or reduced meal percentage. Please take a few minutes to fill out the form and see if you qualify. Families who do qualify may be eligible for additional federal benefits later this year. Please contact us if you have any questions.
