Tyngsborough Elementary School
Update 10/14/18
On Friday, students in kindergarten-grade 5 received progress reports. The 1st trimester progress report is designed to provide an update on your child's transition to the new school year with an emphasis on social emotional learning. Please do not hesitate to contact your child's teacher should you have any questions.
MCAS Results
Last week, families of fourth and fifth grade students will be mailed a report showing their child’s performance on last spring’s MCAS testing. The report provides one indicator of how your child is performing in English Language Arts and Mathematics.
The results will be reported by achievement level and scaled scores:
Achievement Level Scaled Score
Exceeding Expectations 530-560
Meeting Expectations 500-529
Partially Meeting Expectations 470-499
Not Meeting Expectations 440-469
If you’d like to see a sample report, here is a link to an MCAS Parent Report Template. Parents who speak other languages will also receive a template in their native language.
In addition to MCAS results, you should consider what your child’s teachers tell you about their day-to-day performance in class. You should also consider how your child performs on classroom and districts assessments (e.g. unit assessments in math, writing tasks, etc.).
Please send in a canned good/non-perishable item or $1.00 donation for Adopt a Family.
This year, TES will provide the opportunity for students and staff to wear costumes on Wednesday, October 31st - Halloween! In order to make the day a success, we have developed a few guidelines.
Most importantly, all costumes must be school appropriate.
All students participating must come to school dressed in their costumes. Students should not bring makeup or hair products to school.
Basic Costume Don't's:
Costumes may not have parts that interfere with learning. This means no masks or costumes that restrict movement or vision, or prevent sitting at desks. Costumes must not obstruct movement in the hallways.
Costumes may not promote violence or have accessories or props that could be used as a weapon.
We are looking forward to everyone following the guidelines, coming up with creative costumes, and having fun!
Friendly Reminder: Please do not send food or candy into school.
Message from the Health Office
As Halloween approaches please keep in mind these tips to keep your children safe:
Bright color costumes are best and choose flame-retardant materials. If your child will be trick-or-treating outdoors after dark, attach reflective tape to his or her costume or treat bag.
Size it right. In case it's chilly outdoors, make sure your child's costume is loose enough for warm clothing to be worn underneath — but not long enough to cause tripping. Avoid oversized shoes and high heels.
Skip the masks. A mask can obstruct your child's vision, especially if it slips out of place. Use kid-friendly, non-toxic makeup instead.
Limit accessories. Pointed props — such as wands, swords and knives — might pose safety hazards. Carry flashlights or wear glowing wristbands instead.
Inspect treats before indulging. Don't let your child snack while he or she is trick-or-treating. Feed your child an early meal before heading out, and inspect the treats before allowing your child to dive in. Discard anything that's not sealed, has torn packaging or looks questionable. If you have young children, weed out gum, peanuts, hard candies and other choking hazards.
Dental Hygiene. Also keep in my mind with all the sugary Halloween treats the importance of good dental hygiene! The American Dental Association (ADA) recommends brushing your teeth twice a day for two minutes with an ADA-accepted fluoride toothpaste and flossing between your teeth once daily.
We Are Here for Your Child: As you all are likely already aware we are both newly full-time this year in the health office. We have both worked within the system over the last several years part-time and as subs. We are so excited getting to know each of your children more and their health needs! We want to communicate to you all that if your child has any specific need related to their medical history or conditions we are here to support and help you and your child! Please reach out to us if you have any specific concerns that you think we should be aware of. Confidentiality is part of our job as registered nurses!
No More Health Slips: In an effort to become more environmentally friendly we have decided to eliminate the paper visit slips that you have received in the past. Health office visit information will be shared with guardians on file via a secure email. The first time you receive a health office visit a separate e-mail with a secure password will be sent. Please keep a copy of this password as this is what you will need to access future health office visit e-mails. If you are having difficulty opening or viewing these emails please notify one of us.
As always we hope you and your families are healthy this fall! Remember to practice good hand-hygiene, drinking plenty of water every day, and get your flu-shot!
Feel free to contact us if your child has any health concerns! Sarah Isenberger RN BSN & Jen Spanos RN BSN
Adopt-A-Family Program
Dear TPS Community:
It is that time of year again, and the Tyngsborough Public School’s sponsored Adopt-A-Family program is beginning its annual efforts as we approach the 2018 holiday season.
The Adopt-A-Family program has been in existence for over forty years and provides assistance to needy families within our community during the holidays. The continued goal of the program is to assist those in need within our community by providing a meal, as well as gifts for children and teens who might otherwise go without. Last year this Adopt-A-Family program was able to assist over 100 needy families and elderly with help from students in our schools, private citizens and a few community businesses. This year will be no different, times continue to be difficult for a growing number of families.
In order to continue to provide assistance, we are reaching out to community members and businesses in the greater community for support. At this time the program is in need of the following:
➢ Family and children sponsors, please email our Family Liaison Melissa Mallous at
Melissa.Mallous@tyngsboroughps.org ➢ Gift cards to local businesses (Walmart, Target, Market Basket, Old Navy, etc.) ➢ AAF Gift Basket Raffle - Purchase raffle tickets - AAF tickets can be purchased in the
main office of TES, TMS and THS beginning November 5, 2018. The raffle will end on December 6, 2018 and the winners will be announced on December 7, 2018. ➢ Monetary donations (checks made out to Tyngsborough High School, memo: Adopt A
Family Program) can be sent to Tyngsborough Public Schools, 50 Norris Road, Tyngsborough, MA 01879, ATTN: Sharon Fairbanks
If you are interested and able to make a donation, sponsoring a child/family yourself, or as a group, or offering support in another way, please contact one of the Adopt-A-Family committee members listed below. We look forward to establishing new partnerships within our community. Your contribution, along with the combined efforts and generosity of many, will ensure another successful season of giving for our neighbors in need.
Warm regards,
