Dear Families,

We are committed to teaming with you in the interests of your students' safety and success at school. We rely on a foundation of trust, value, and respect in our collaborations with you, and our district has a Civility Policy to guide communications among staff, families, and the community (copied below or attached).

Throughout the year we expect you will have questions about the progress of your child and about actions or decisions made by school personnel. We welcome constructive feedback and respectful communication and inquiry in the spirit of seeking to understand. We thank you, in advance, for your support in maintaining a safe school environment.

MAP Testing: This week, all new students to CUSD will be taking the formative assessment Measures of Academic Performance (MAP) developed by Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA). MAP tests determine a student’s instructional level and measure academic growth throughout the year and from one year to the next in reading and mathematics. These assessments are unique in that they are computer-adaptive which allows each test to be customized to the student and to pinpoint each student’s specific instructional level. For more information, click on the link: MAP information

Bus Evacuation Drill: On Wednesday, all CMS PE students will be participating in a bus evacuation drill during their PE class. Students will be reviewing and practicing procedures that will be used in case a bus evacuation is needed. Even if students do not ride the bus daily, buses are used for all grade level field trips.

Awareness and Prevention of Harassment lesson: We are committed to providing your children with relevant and important educational opportunities. On Wednesday, our exceptional science teachers will be sharing this topic and creating an awareness of why we need to be respectful of others and how we inform adults should we encounter this issue. The information that will be shared is currently posted on our school website at:

PE Swim Days

Dear Parents and Students,

All CMS students will swim during their Physical Education class on the following six days:

Monday, 9/16, Tuesday. 9/17, Thursday, 9/19, Monday 9/23, Tuesday, 9/24, & Friday, 9/27.

Students will be responsible for bringing their swimsuit and a towel in a plastic bag daily as there is no locker space dedicated for wet clothing.

Since we are swimming during school time, students must be modestly covered. Swimsuit requirements are as follows:

  • Students must wear actual swimsuits. No cotton clothing is allowed as cotton clogs the pool filters.

  • Boys should wear swim trunks or board shorts, Speedo or Jammers. Boys may also wear rash guards.

  • Girls should be adequately covered. Recommended: a one piece suit or a two piece suit and rash guard. Girls may wear board shorts over their suits.

  • Students may bring goggles.

  • Students with shoulder length or longer hair must wear it tied back or wear a swim cap.

  • Please label all towels!

Students will be working on Aquatic Safety Skills, improvement of basic swimming strokes, as well as cardio-vascular fitness. The pool is fully staffed with plenty of Red Cross Certified Lifeguards on deck and Red Cross Certified Water Safety Instructors.

Students unable to swim due to illness or injury must bring a parent note to be excused. ALL missed swim days must be made up. Make up days and times and procedures will be announced.

Please let us know if you have questions or concerns.

Sincerely,

CMS PE DEPT

Information Night for 2019-2020 8th Grade East Coast Trip

Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2019 at 5:00pm in the CMS library

Dear Parents and Students,

I am excited to again be leading a group of Coronado Middle School students on an exciting WorldStrides program to Williamsburg, VA, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, PA, and New York, NY. This year’s trip will take place during the 2019-2020 school year over Spring Break (March 28 - April 3, 2020) . On this once-in-a-lifetime adventure, students will explore our nation's most important historical sites and experience incomparable learning moments. This trip will enrich the learning experience of students, however, it is not a school activity nor a school sponsored trip.

If your child is not yet registered, there will be a trip information meeting to discuss this wonderful opportunity and provide time for you to ask questions on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 5:00 PM at CMS in the library. The trip is already half full, so if you are interested, attendance is strongly encouraged.

Sincerely,

Ananda Dejarnette

East Coast Trip Program Leader

CUSD Civility Policy

Coronado USD | 1000 | BP 1313 Community Relations

The Board of Education believes that Coronado Unified School District staff will treat all community members with respect and will expect the same in return. The district is committed to maintaining orderly educational and administrative processes in keeping schools and administrative offices free from disruptions and preventing unauthorized persons from entering school/district grounds.

This policy promotes mutual respect, civility, and orderly conduct among district employees, parents, and the public. This policy is not intended to deprive any person or his/her right to freedom of expression, but only to maintain, to the extent possible and reasonable, a safe, harassment-free work place for our students and staff. In the interest of presenting district employees as positive role models to the children of this district as well as the community, CUSD encourages positive communication, and discourages volatile, hostile, or aggressive actions. The district seeks public cooperation with this endeavor.

(cf. 0410. - Recognition of Human Diversity)

Disruptions

1. Any individual who disrupts or threatens to disrupt school/office operations; threatens the health and safety of students or staff, willfully causes property damage; uses loud and/or offensive language, which would provide a violent reaction; or who has otherwise established a continued pattern of unauthorized entry on school district property, will be directed to leave school or school district property promptly by the superintendent or designee.

2. If any member of the public uses obscenities or speaks in a demanding, loud, insulting, and/or demeaning manner, the administrator or employee to whom the remarks are directed will calmly and politely admonish the speaker to communicate civilly. If corrective action is not taken by the abusing party, the district employee will verbally notify the abusing party that the meeting, conference, or telephone conversation is terminated, and if the meeting or conference is on district premises, the offending person will be directed to leave promptly.
