Introduction

If you are standing in a forest that has chirping birds, colorful leaves, and swaying trees then you are standing in the Temperate Deciduous Forest! The Temperate Deciduous Forest is a biome. A biome is a major type of ecological community. This biome is located mostly in the Eastern United States. One important part about this biome is the location as it impacts the climate changes throughout the year. These climate changes are referred to as the four seasons, fall, winter, spring, and summer. In the temperate deciduous forest plants and animals have special adaptations that help them to survive the climate changes

Location

Temperate Deciduous Forests are not found on every continent in the world. Most temperate deciduous forests are found in the eastern USA, Canada, Europe, China, Japan, and Russia. Therefore, they are found in North America, Europe and Asia. All temperate deciduous forests are north of the equator. Temperate Deciduous forests cover 9.4% of the Earth’s surface. They cover 30% of Earth’s terrestrial surface. The location of each biome determines it’s climate.

Climate

One season is hot and one season is cold. The climate changes between each season in the Temperate Deciduous Forest. Climate is the average weather conditions of a particular place or region over a period of time. The Temperate Deciduous Forest is located further north of the equator between 23°north and 38° south from the equator. The average temperature is around 50°F. The precipitation is about 30-60 inches that falls all year round. This biome has 4 seasons. The summers are mild, winter temps can be well below freezing, in spring most precipitation happens, and in fall all plants have to adapt to the climate!!!

Plant Adaptation

There are many plants that have AWESOME adaptations to their environment all over the world! So I will tell you about some plant adaptations of the Temperate Deciduous Forest. Plants need to adapt to their environment in order to survive. The deciduous tree’s leaves can’t survive the harsh winter so the tree drops the leaves and goes into dormancy to keep alive. A close relative is the elm tree. This tree's adaptation is the tree loses its leaves in the winter. The leaves turn colors when dropped like red, yellow, and orange and it also goes into a dormancy trance.

Animal Adaptations

If it sunny and blazing hot or frigid and snowy all animals have to adapt in the Temperate Deciduous Forest. Most of the time animals have to adapt in the cold. You might ask yourself what animals live in this biome? Well, many animals live here such as small birds, snakes, hawks, coyotes, mountain lions, black bears, squirrels, chipmunks, deer, skunks, and more. In our house we have heat but animals do not they have something that they have to do something called adaptations. Adaptations are what animals do to survive. Animals in this biome have many adaptations such as hibernation, migration, and animals grow thick fur. For example, the black bear has long claws to hollow out trees because black bears live in hollowed out trees. Also, the black bear hibernates in the winter since food scarce. Another animal that has that has an adaptation is the red fox. This animal grows thick red fur to survive the harsh cold. In addition, many species of birds migrate to warmer places in the winter. There you have it. Animals adapt to the seasonal changes in the Temperate Deciduous Biome.

Conclusion

Based on the climate and location the temperate deciduous forest is very unique. The plant and animal adaptations are very fascinating are based on the seasonal changes in this biome. I hope you learned a lot about the Temperate Deciduous Forest and I hope you come and visit.
