Low impact development, or LID, is an alternative approach to managing stormwater that seeks to improve the quality of water before it enters receiving streams, rivers, and lakes. Additionally, LID is described as distributed stormwater management that incorporates infiltration, harvesting, and reuse to decrease runoff volume and rate.

This presentation will:

• provide an overview of LID and green infrastructure,
  
• describe selection of LID practices for stormwater pollutant load reduction,
  
• step through example design calculations for bioretention cells and rain gardens, and
• share case studies in Alabama.

Rainwater harvesting is beneficial to the environment, your community resources and your wallet. It is a form of Low Impact Development (LID). You can reduce erosion and runoff by collecting water from your roof and using the non-potable water to irrigate your garden/landscape, wash your vehicle, and flush your toilet. Less runoff means less community infrastructure and operating cost.
