Duncan Creek Elementary

Back to School 2nd Edition

Big picture

Welcome Back!

We are super excited about the return to in-person school! Our former digital and in-person students will soon UNITE together to kick off what is going to be the best school year ever! We are super charged about the many activities and events leading up to a wonderful year of engaging activities that will strengthen our connections within the Duncan Creek Family!

First Day of School

AUGUST 4 - SCHOOL BEGINS! Gwinnett County Public Schools will again provide a staggered transition for grades K-5 to return inside the building for the 2021-22 start of school. At this time, masks are required. GCPS will continue to receive guidance from the public health department and the CDC.

FIRST DAY OF IN-PERSON INSTRUCTION

  • Kindergarten, 1st Grade & small group Special Education - Wednesday, August 4 (2nd - 5th attend digitally)
  • 2nd Grade and 3rd Grade - Thursday, August 5 (4th & 5th attend digitally)
  • 4th Grade and 5th Grade - Monday, August 9

Transportation

Please make sure you pick up your car rider number and/or verify bus transportation at our Open House on August 2nd. Bus stops and times change every year. Please keep in mind the staggered start and beginning of the year processes may cause buses to arrive early or late at the beginning of the school year. Times for bus stops, found in the Parent Portal/ParentVue, should be more accurate after the first couple weeks of school.

Supply Lists

Please visit our Duncan Creek website: https://www.gcpsk12.org/DuncanCreekES to find the supply list for your child's teacher. Click on the "Academics" tab at the top of the page. Select our child's grade level, and then click on the button with the name of your child's teacher. This link will open a brochure with information about the teacher, grade level AKS, and a supply list.

Lunch

GREAT NEWS! We will be returning to students eating in the cafeteria next school year.

Due to USDA Waiver Extensions, we are now offering meals at no charge to anyone 18 and under through the end of the school year. However, all parents are encouraged to fill out a new Free and Reduced Price Application for SY21-22. The application will be available by July 16th.

While an application is not required to receive meals, eligibility includes benefits for other services such as additional funding to support student education, technology and internet access, discounts for fees associated with the college application process, and discounted fees for SAT, ACT, & AP tests along with scholarship opportunities. Free & Reduced Lunch Application.

Duncan Creek Open House

Relationships matter, and we want you and your child to connect with your child’s teacher prior to the start of the school year. We are excited to have parents back in the building. Please make every effort to come for Open House.

Monday, August 2nd

8:30am-11:30am Open House (times are split by first letter of last name)

8:30am-10:00am Students with last names starting with A-L

10:00am-11:30am Students with last names starting with M-Z

Curriculum Night

We will be holding a virtual Curriculum Night from 6:00pm-8:00pm on Thursday, August 26th. The virtual setting will allow us to minimize crowded classrooms and streamline Curriculum Night into one evening. The teachers will hold 2 sessions. One session will be from 6:00pm-7:00pm, and a second session will be from 7:00pm-8:00pm. Parents may join either session.

Devices

Students are welcome to bring their own device from home to use at school. School devices will be checked out to students in grades 2-5 prior to Open House and will be stored in the classrooms. These devices (chromebooks/laptops/touch pads) should remain at school unless there is a digital learning day. Students who do not have access to a device at home may take their school device home and bring it back to school upon return. Students who bring a device from home will not need a school device. Students in grades 2-5 should only take a device home during Open House if it is needed for the staggered start to in-person instruction.

Student Password Reset

We have important information to share regarding the password your student will use to obtain initial access to the student portal and instructional resources at the beginning of the 2021-22 school year.

On July 23, 2021, your student’s password will be reset to reflect their birthday.

To access the student portal, your student will be required to type their numeric birthday in the password field using two digits for their birth month, two digits for their birthday, and four digits for their birth year. For example, if your student’s birth occurred on June 9, 2015, their reset password would be 06092015.

Students in Grades 6-12 will be required to change their password immediately after the first successful login to the student portal. GCPS is strongly recommending that students generate a passphrase as their password. A passphrase is a sentence-like string of words that is longer than a traditional password, easy to remember, and difficult to guess. Students, families, and staff members can learn more about creating a passphrase by visiting our website at www.gcpsk12.org/Page/29972.

Students in Grades K-5 will retain their birthdate password for the first six weeks of school. After Labor Day, K-5 students will be provided a unique passphrase as their password. More information on how to access an elementary student’s unique passphrase will be provided during the first few weeks of school.

The privacy and security of the information belonging to our students, families, and employees is a strategic priority and we appreciate your support in the district’s efforts.

Please email any concerns you may have about the password reset process to data.privacy@gcpsk12.org.
