KEEPING FAMILIES CONNECTED

MCCV Beach Week
This year a lot of traditions are changing, but MCCV always makes the best of what they’ve been given! In lieu of our all school day at the beach, our families were asked to enjoy the beach on their own, be out in nature, and as a part of the Ocean Guardians, clean up trash from where it doesn’t belong to protect our oceans! You can see from the pictures the clean-ups were near and far! We hope you and your students enjoyed beach week.

Message from Ms. Amy

Good MCCV Families,

Let the countdown begin - 10 more school days until Fall Break!

What a first quarter it has been! Shout outs to you all for taking on distance learning with such determination and grace. Everyone seems to be giving it their all, even as the challenges keep on coming. Together we'll get to the other side of this.

Attendance looks a little different this year! Zoom is where it’s at for your attendance. Showing up for your instructional blocks and classes will get your attendance counted. If you have to miss your zoom, but can get your work done and submitted on Seesaw or Classroom, that will also count. Just be sure to email your teacher and Kathleen Miller, our attendance clerk, so we can put in the notes the reason for the absence. Thanks for helping us get it right on attendance this year!

Take care,

Ms. Amy

Introducing the 2020 Cherry Valley Homeathon!

Just like our beloved annual Walkathon, the 2020 Homeathon will be the Mary Collins Education Foundation’s biggest fundraiser of the year. The money raised by the Homeathon supports our charter programs and core curriculum, including the garden and environmental education, performing arts, social emotional education, physical education, middle school electives, and advanced math. We need your participation and support to keep our special school thriving!

We are grateful to the Cherry Valley PTA for partnering with us on this event!

SAVE THE DATE!
This year’s Homeathon will take place over a whole week: October 26 through 30. During that week, students will keep track of the laps they are completing at home, and the whole family can get involved. How many laps will you do?

Stay tuned for more information about collecting pledges and about the exciting prizes you can earn. We can't wait to walk with you!

Mark Your Calendar Now!

2020 PEF Live-Stream BASH: Bringing All Students Hope!

Saturday, September 12th

Our students and schools need us now more than ever before. Tune in on Saturday, September 12th, for the 2020 PEF BASH Live-Stream Broadcast! Join our partners and the entire community to help our local students succeed today, tomorrow, and in the future! The evening program will look a bit different from our previous format as it will be a virtual event celebrating all 38 local TK-12 public, private, and charter schools in our community! The event usually attracts 400+ guests but now has the potential to drastically increase “attendance” with an hour-long event featuring a shortened live auction and all-important virtual paddle raise to “Fund the Future” benefiting more than 12,000 students annually enrolled in our schools.

The next academic year is going to bring challenges we have never before experienced. PEF, with your support, is determined to help ALL our schools succeed in delivering innovative curriculum to best serve students as they navigate this unprecedented time in their academic journey, regardless if they are engaged in distance learning or on-campus instruction. For nearly four decades, PEF has raised funds to enrich and enhance the academic experience for generations of students. By joining our Live-Stream BASH event you will ensure they will continue to have the tools and support they need.

AUTHOR MAC BARNETT COMING TO MCCV!

All Students K-8 May Order Autographed Books (password: MCCV0914)

A special thank you to Patty and Copperfield's for helping to make this author visit possible.

We are so delighted to be doing a virtual author event with author, Mac Barnett. On Monday, September 14th, 4th and 5th grade students will have the opportunity to meet and listen (via Zoom) to NY Times bestselling novelist (and Copperfield's favorite), author Mac Barnett!, and all students at MCCV have the opportunity to order an autographed book!

Mac's series Mac B., Kid Spy - the purportedly true adventures of his childhood (Mac can't understand why we have these books in the Fiction section - he swears they happened) are bestsellers and SO much fun. They are smart and clever and appeal to all ages. And Mac? He's a delight, and such a great presenter.

There are five books in the series; the newest one just came out on September 1st. We can't recommend them highly enough! And, although the 4th and 5th graders will be lucky enough to 'meet' Mac, all students, school-wide, are welcome to order autographed copies of the Mac B., Kid Spy series!

Each or all of them can be ordered here (password: MCCV0914); autographed books will be available to be picked up at Copperfield's 140 Kentucky St. after school on September 21st!

BONUS--If you'd like to order a signed copy of one of Mac's other books, please call Copperfield's at 707-762-0563, pre-pay it and we will put it in the MCCV stack to be signed!

GARDEN UPDATE: HI FROM SARAH KONIAK AND KATE JETT

Greetings from your garden team. Several pumpkins are coming in, broccoli starts are getting established and we’re seeding some other winter veggies to get in the ground while the soil is warm. Classes over zoom are feeling more comfortable, although being back together in person would be SO welcome.

There are bigger garden projects in the works as well, and you can help! We are looking for some material donations. First, hoping to track down 85 bricks. Not expecting to find them all from one family but if you have some to donate, that would be helpful. And second, looking for redwood planks (fencing or decking that may be coming out). If you or someone you know has these materials available please email us and we can coordinate pickup. Thanks!

Alumni Olivia Manz Beautifies MCCV Campus

As a Girl Scout Cadette, Olivia Manz is working on her Silver Award. She has to put in at least 50 hours of community service that results in a project making a lasting difference in her community. After working with the District Office and Ms. Amy, Mary Collins School is lucky to have newly designed and painted doors near the Lodge. All the paint was donated by Peterson’s Paint Store. She wanted to make sure the doors had uplifting quotes on them. Thank you Olivia!

Celebrate Reading Day Success!

This year as part of Celebrate Reading Day our whole school read We are Water Protectors by Carole Lindstrom. It is a beautiful, lyrical exploration of the values, connections and wisdom of Indigenous people as it relates to water and Mother Earth. Each class also hosted a Special Guest Reader and, of course, we all enjoyed and cherished the simple joy of reading for pleasure.

Copperfield's is offering an opportunity to purchase a copy of "We are Water Protectors"

Here is the link. Password: MCCVWaterProtectors

All orders will be online, and books can be picked up at Copperfield's in Petaluma

Please submit your Celebrate Reading Day photos to celebratereadingday@gmail.com, with the understanding that submitting photos grants permission for the photos to be published online, in the school newsletter, the school website, and on social media.

We will create a shared slideshow of our together/apart-reading for our next newsletter.

Jubilee Planning Meeting-September 21

First meeting will take place Monday, September 21st at 5:30pm

It’s that time of year again! Time to start planning the PTA’s biggest fundraising event, the Cherry Jubilee! The event is held in the Spring, but the planning starts early. Whether the event is held in person, or via online auction, we need your help! Money raised from this event is used to fund the teacher activity fund (classroom supplies, art, etc.,) donation to our library non-profit, student scholarships for field trips and enrichment classes, the fund a need (either an environmental or performing arts project/need decided each year by the staff,) and so much more!

Our first meeting will take place Monday, September 21st at 5:30pm. Zoom link is below! The meeting will mainly be a discussion about donations, but please come whether you're ready to jump in or even if you just want to see what it’s all about! You don’t have to sign up for anything at the meeting, we’re just getting started and looking for parents who might be interested in helping out.

If you can’t make the meeting, but have some ideas or connections for donations, please email mccvptafundraising@gmail.com

Image: Please Save Your Plastic Caps

We began collecting plastic caps last year in hopes of creating a mural for Earth Day. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19, Earth Day didn't happen, but we would still like to create a mural one day when we do return to school.

  • Please save any plastic caps that you don't recycle
  • Wash the caps, then store them in a bag or box
  • Bring the caps to school on the next materials pick up or when we return to school.
