Student Progress Report – April 22
On Wednesday April 22, 2020, a progress report was made available to parents/guardians who can view the most up-to-date marks through PowerSchool using the Parent Portal. Students can do the same using their login.
Students will be given the opportunity to improve marks for ALL courses and coursework. Please note, however, that work completed in Term 1 will represent FINAL marks for those courses that ended in January 31, 2020.
If students would like to improve their mark(s), they will need to get in touch with their various subject teachers. Please note that for those students who are not achieving success, subject teachers will be in contact on how to improve marks.
In light of COVID-19, parent-teacher cconferences can be arranged through non-traditional means such as email or phone calls. Please feel free to get in touch with subject teachers to discuss this progress report.
Learning will continue in ALL classes/courses. Students are encouraged to keep in touch with their subject teachers using Google Classroom, email, Google Meet, etc.
Thank you for your continued support. Take care and stay safe.

Janeway Children’s Hospital Foundation
Hello friends,
We hope you are doing well and staying safe. For any of you who are essential workers, we thank you. Whether you are working at home, or away from home, we know these are challenging times.
For this reason, we would like to “come together”... Over the past several weeks, we at the Janeway Foundation have been inspired by seeing our community come together. As Newfoundlanders & Labradorians, we're more than neighbours; we’re there for one another. We want to take this “time at home” to connect with you, have a little fun, and maybe lighten everyone’s spirits for a bit.
On Friday, May 8th, we're asking you to come together for all our Janeway kids.
Taking part is easy!
Wear your pajamas, post a photo or video with #JamaramaAtHome
Tag your friends and family!
Come together in this fun, one-day Jamarama digital event!
Unlike “Jamarama at School” that we hold in October, there’s no need to register for “Jamarama @home.”
Keep your pajamas on and… be creative! Take a picture, then Post, Share and Retweet!

Thank-you Voluteers!

Google Meet Guidelines for Families to Help Protect Student and Family Privacy
Video meetings between teachers and students are extensions of the classroom and regular classroom rules apply. While we are connecting with students in a virtual environment, everyone has a responsibility to ensure the protection of privacy. Please strictly adhere to the following guidelines:
- Teachers will invite students to participate in virtual meetings by sharing a meeting URL or unique nickname through Gmail or Google Classroom. To ensure that only invited guests have access to the session, please do not share this meeting information publicly.
- The meeting will show the names and faces of student participants. To ensure that identities are kept private, please do not post any photos or videos of your child’s virtual meetings to social media if other student faces or names are shown.
- Discuss ways you can protect the privacy of members of your household, such as physically locating in one spot without background activity.

Google Classroom
Did you know that as a parent/guardian in Google Classroom, you can have access to:
Missing work—Work that’s late at the time the email was sent
Upcoming work—Work that’s due today and tomorrow (for daily emails) or work that’s due in the upcoming week (for weekly emails)
Class activity—Announcements, assignments, and questions recently posted by teachers
If you sign up using a Google account, you also have access to email summaries you can choose to receive on a weekly or daily basis. If you don’t have a Google Account, you only get weekly emails and can’t change any settings.
To sign up for this feature in Google Classroom:
Email one of your child’s teachers and ask him or her to add you. You will be sent a confirmation email and once you have accepted this email invitation, you will automatically be added to all the Google Classrooms your child is a part of, and will automatically receive weekly emails. If you signed up using a Google account, you can go to https://classroom.google.com/u/0/gs to change your settings.
Please note: Due to privacy laws, you cannot be given access to your child’s classroom. Parents/Guardians can only get email summaries.

Taking Notes Digitally
In case you were wondering how to complete your notes digitally if you don't have a printer... Most of the notes your teachers post online are in a format called PDF. Information in this format is easy to print out, but it makes it is much harder to edit the document than it is with a Google Doc. This is how you can use an app called DocHub to take notes directly on your PDF doc. Then you have a digital copy! No trees had to die in the taking of your notes. Take care of yourselves! And the trees....

Student Council News
Canadian Student Leadership Conference 2020
Due to the school closures across our country, the 36th Annual National Student Leadership Conference scheduled for September 22 - September 27 in Yorkton, Saskatchewan, will be postponed for a year. It will happen in September 2021 at the same location. The theme is “From the Roots Up.” The conference theme will flow through the keynote speeches, leadership workshops, volunteer opportunities and cultural experiences of the conference.
Any student who had signed up for this already, and current grade 8 students interested in attending this conference next year, should see Mme Quann once school reopens.
Yearbooks
Work is underway to produce a yearbook for 2019-2020 school year. As we are a busy school, there are more than enough pictures to fill a yearbook in spite of our school’s current closure. The only event that will not be included in the yearbook that was included in all previous yearbooks is our Grade 9 School Leaving Carnival. There may be a few groups or teams whose photos are not available but there are many candid pictures taken throughout the school year that will more than make up for them.
Ordering of yearbooks (You can now place your order online)
The website to visit to order online is ybpay.lifetouch.ca and the school code is 11573720.Photos Wanted!
Thank you to everyone who has submitted pictures for the yearbook. Please continue to send any team pictures to colettequann@nlesd.ca. If you are sending from a cellphone, please select actual size to ensure the quality is sufficient for uploading.
When sending a picture, please include the student grade level and coach's name in case there is more than one team in a grade. Team and group photos cannot be included without your help. Do not assume someone else has sent one in. Mme Quann would rather have multiple pictures of a group/team than no picture at all!
