I am elated to welcome you back for the 2013-14 school year! As principal for the past two years, I have witnessed several changes at Statesville Road; changes in curriculum, changes in school level personnel, changes in student population, changes in district leadership, and changes in financial and human resources. Despite these changes, I have also witnessed our staff work through plans, processes, and school wide issues in a manner that has, over time, yielded a strong foundation for us to build our students' success. I am confident that we have settled on the right combination of instructional strategies, data processes, personal commitment, positive interactions as well as love for our students and for each other that will allow us to continue to transform our school into the beacon that we are designing it to be. I remember sharing my personal vision for Statesville Road with you last year: Statesville Road is becoming the highest performing high-poverty school in the nation. If we say it, we will believe it. When we believe it, our actions will support it. This year is the year that vision will begin to manifest itself. So put on your seatbelts and hold on because this is the year that "Success Takes Flight" at Statesville Road Elementary and I am honored to take this ride with you!

Classroom Teachers: If you have not done so already as an individual or as a grade level, please email your classroom welcome back letter to Beckles (Cheryl.email@example.com) and Cc Williams by 12:00pm on Friday, August 9th.
Team Leads: Your IB Planner Worksheet and IB Planner for the first 3 IB units is due for your grade level on August 15th. Email final documents to Stephanie.firstname.lastname@example.org and Cc Williams.

Frequent Flyer Q and A
1. What is the earliest date we can get into our rooms to work?
The custodial crew is working to have all deep cleaning completed by the end of the day on Wednesday, August 14th. Teachers with classrooms located inside the building can work in their classrooms Thursday, August 15th. All mobile classrooms are ready now.
2. Are we still allowed to paint our classrooms and do we have paint?
Yes and Yes and No! We want you to paint your classrooms....be creative. Create an accent wall, a visual feature, a mural, a quote, or any kid friendly image on your wall(s). We want our kids to walk into a school that feels and looks new when they arrive on August 26th. Several staff members have gotten paint donations and we just recently got a 20 gallon supply from Lowe's at Northlake that will be available next week. The paint that we have on hand now is located in the conference room. Of course, if we do not have the colors you want, feel free to purchase your own paint. And we still need additional contributions, so keep using the solicitation letter around town. Greene, Holoman, and Gilliam have already been working on their classrooms, so take a look at what they've done for inspiration. Let's beautify our school!
3. Will the school be open anytime on the weekends?
The building will be open Saturday, August 17th 8:00 am - 6:00 pm and Sunday, August 18th 3:00 pm - 7:00 pm.
4. Considering the new policy regarding Teacher Assistants, will teacher assistants attend any of the meetings during the week of August 19th?
Unfortunately, teacher assistants are not able to attend any of the workday meetings or activities. The first day Teacher Assistants will report to work will be Monday, August 26th at 7:15am. If any of this changes, I will communicate with the staff.
5. Why is the CMS Pep Rally a required event?
The Superintendent, district leadership, and your principal would like to celebrate and acknowledge the hard work done by our teachers! This event is one way to say "thank you" and to fill your bucket before the school year begins to make withdrawals from your bucket. So come to the Time Warner Arena, enjoy the festivities, win some give aways, hear the Superintendent's vision for the district, relax, and be celebrated! Woot, Woot !!
6. Is there special attire for any of the activities and meetings the week of August 19th?
Yes. Tuesday's opening staff meeting is casual. Jeans are ok. For Thursday's pep rally, please wear your I (heart) Statesville Road t-shirt. If you are new to the staff, please wear a royal blue or white or red shirt. For Thursday evening's Open House, please dress in business casual attire. Jeans are not appropriate for Open House.
