The Lion's ROAR
Lake Ridge Elementary School's Family Newsletter
We are "Chasing 100" every day!
A Message from the Principal
Hello! I hope this message finds you and your family well. As you know, we are in unprecedented times. My hope is that staff, students, and families can focus on their safety, health, and well-being at this time.
It is with student health and well-being in mind that I want to remind all families of the opportunity for all students (ages 18 and under) to pick up breakfast and lunch offered at various locations throughout our county. This free food service is available to all students in Prince William County Monday through Friday. Every Lake Ridge Lion can take advantage of this food service. See https://www.pwcs.edu/news/what_s_new/to-go_meals_available_free_during_closure for more information.
I understand that at this time many families throughout our community may have needs for additional resources. Our school social worker, Cashawna McCole, is an amazing source of support who can assist you with locating community resources. Please feel free to reach out to her via email at mccolecr@pwcs.edu.
There may be several questions on your mind regarding future access to the school building, summer school, or even information regarding next school year. Throughout this ever-changing landscape, I will send out a monthly newsletter in this format to maintain consistent communication with all Lake Ridge Lion Families. While I will provide highlights of any new information from Prince William County Schools, please know that the most up to date and complete information can be found on Prince William County School's website. You can access Coronavirus-related changes in operations at the following website: https://www.pwcs.edu/cms/One.aspx?portalId=340225&pageId=41331058
Instructionally, I'm proud to inform you that our staff has been working diligently to provide instructional opportunities for students. Many teachers have reached out to connect with students virtually through online conferencing, telephone calls, or mail. Additionally, students have the opportunity to improve third quarter grades until April 24th. If you have questions regarding specific areas in which your child could improve, please contact your child's teacher. All activities from April 14th on are optional learning activities and will not be graded.
In alignment with Dr. Walts outline of our Virtual Schoolhouse, our staff has developed a weekly schedule. I am attaching the document to this newsletter. You will find it when you scroll to the next section. In this schedule you will notice that each subject, including encore subjects, have 60 minutes of combined review lessons and student learning per week. Additionally, you will notice that each teacher has one 60 minute block designated as virtual "office hours". We spaced out office hours among educators to facilitate communication. Teachers are excited to continue working with students, designing review lessons, and student application opportunities. In order to support various needs of students and households, teachers will be creating high-tech, mid-tech, and low-tech instructional opportunities each week. I am inspired by the staff in our building. They continually seek opportunities to connect with students and desire to be with them in person as soon as possible.
Virtual support with co-planned lessons are the focus for our teachers of students with disabilities and teachers of students who are English learners. They will continue to co-plan for supports, scaffolds, and accommodations to the extent possible under the current conditions. It is important to understand that we cannot provide instruction under the current school closure conditions nor can we offer students an instructional day and services on IEPs 504 plans, gifted education plans, and required EL services as it does when schools are open for instruction. However, our teachers are working diligently and collaboratively to provide learning opportunities for students.
